5. American Cocker Spaniel

6. Welsh Springer Spaniel

Come on, I bet that you thought this one was also an English breed – because I did. It is actually an American breed, and the first place to develop this dog was in South Carolina.

They made them pretty, too; this breed is most notable for its livery brown coat and long ears.

Yeah, I know it doesn’t sound very appealing when I say that something is livery brown, but you should see the rich brown pigment this dog possesses – it is outstanding.

8. Clumber Spaniel

Personality: Mellow, amusing and gentlemanly

You may think that a Clumber Spaniel is actually a clumsy Spaniel due to their appearance, but this white dog breed is actually the biggest of the Spaniel dog breeds.

This chiller killer is so low-key and easy-going that you may want to take away the title of the sporting dog from them. On the other hand, it does make them a perfect family dog.

9. English Toy Spaniel

This dog often likes a specific person and would rather ignore a group or unfamiliar faces.

They are so special that there is even a legend that says the last living creature that Queen Mary of Scotland encountered on her way to the scaffold was an English Toy Spaniel. What an exalted role this dog has had.

10. Irish Water Spaniel

I was surprised when I found out that as well as being the tallest, it is also the oldest among Spaniel dog breeds. And since they are so old, no one actually knows how they were developed.

11. American Water Spaniel

14. Brittany Spaniel

15. Continental Toy Spaniel

When we say Continental Toy Spaniel it probably doesn’t really ring a bell but Papillon may sound a bit more familiar.
Papillon means butterfly in French. But why would a dog be named butterfly? Well, there must be some resemblance. Indeed, this dog is light spirited like a butterfly but that is not the actual reason.
The reason is their ears look like the wings of a butterfly. More like a fluffy butterfly, which makes their appearance even cuter.
There is another version of the Papillon that doesn’t have this trait. Their ears are not erect and that is why they are not called Papillon but Phalene.
Originally it was called Epagneul Nain Continental, but you will also find them under the Butterfly dog and Squirrel dog name because they only hunt for squirrels.
This dog is perfect when combined with some other small and fluffy dogs, for example the Maltese mix, Havanese mix or other mixes.

16. Sprocker Spaniel

Make sure you provide them with good dog food to prevent health problems.
They might be prone to some typical issues such as ear infections, hip dysplasia or eye problems.

17. Nederlandse Kooikerhondje

This is a cute dog with a funny name. Although it only sounds complicated in English, in Dutch it means duck catchers small dog. I’m sure you can guess what their prime interest is – probably not Geese.
You can also call them a Dutch Spaniel, Kooiker or Dutch Decoy Spaniel.
Decoy is a nickname this dog got, because of eendenkooi, a device for catching all sorts of waterfowls, especially ducks.
Some would place this dog on the list of the spotted dog breeds even though it is mainly red and white. However, it can have a few spots in the form of black tips.
Their beauty is immortalized in the paintings of Rembrandt and Jan Steen. What an honor!

18. Picardy Spaniel

You can take this dog to hunt birds and hares with you; they will gladly join you.

20. Blue Picardy Spaniel

Next in line is a dog that originated from the banks of the river Somme in France.

You can’t find many specimens of this breed because there are only a thousand of them born in France every year.

20. Tibetan Spaniel

They call them Simkhyi, and they have a very special place in Buddhist spirituality. The alter ego of this small pup is a lion dog.
It is called a lion dog because their mane makes them look like a lion.

21. Japanese Spaniel

I think only teacup dog breeds can get sweeter than this one. Have you ever heard of a Japanese Chin? Well, Japanese Spaniels and the Japanese Chin are the same.
It is not registered within an American Kennel Club (AKC) but it is registered within our hearts.
It is best known for its silky coat that gives them a royal look but in a way they are royal. At least the royalty of the Far East used to like them a lot.
When you look at their eyes you probably won’t look straight at them because this breed is known for strabismus.
Nevertheless, this is a dog that still impresses everyone who encounters them, whether it is upper class or not.

22. Stabyhoun

Personality: Intelligent, loving and responsive

Even though they are one of the spotted dog breeds and is black and white, they are not from Dalmatia, which is where the most prominent spotted dog breed is from. This breed comes from the region of Friesland, located in the Netherlands.
They call them Stabijhoun, Beike, Fryske Stabij and Stabij there. Their name literally means stand by me. Yeah, I know it’s like a Ben E. King song.
If there is small game nearby, like foxes or birds, the Stabi is likely to go after it because they are excellent gun dogs.
This dog is gentle, calm and sensitive but can be stubborn. The best way to prevent this is to start with early socialization.

23. French Spaniel

Also known as a Dutch Tulip Hound (so adorable), it is an all black dog breed. It is actually an old dog breed but is not recognized by the kennel clubs.
We can prove it because they are included in a few paintings from the 17th century.
Their best role is as a companion dog, but they can also be a successful watchdog.
They are an easygoing pooch that is good with people and other animals and can even be trained to have a nice attitude toward cats and rodents.
