Finding the right dog to suit your circumstances, home, and lifestyle can sometimes be quite a difficult task.
The truth is that all breeds have their own challenges, characters, and quirks. Some are easier to care for and live with than others. And some can be a nightmare if you’re a first-time dog owner!
We’re looking at one mixed-breed in particular to give you all the information you need, so you can decide whether the Corgi Beagle mix is a good choice.
Although you probably already know this, there are actually two breeds of Corgi: the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. As the Beagi can be a cross between either of these and the Beagle, we’ll include both to make sure we cover all angles.
We’ll begin by briefly covering a contentious topic, but one that should be considered: that of hybrid, mixed-breed, or crossbreed dogs.
Crossbreed Controversy
How many dog breeds do you think there are in the world? Could you take a guess? The American Kennel Club (AKC) lists 195, but that’s only the official ones. Other kennel clubs list more than two hundred, and the actual figure is probably around 350.
How did we get so many?
Well, when we see a Chihuahua next to a Great Dane, it’s easy to forget that they, along with every other dog breed, share a common ancestor: Canis lupus, the gray wolf.
Over thousands of years, humans have bred different types of dogs to suit their needs and fancies, creating over two hundred separate breeds. As our example highlights, these can vary drastically in height, weight, color, and temperament.
Some breeds have been with us for hundreds of years, while others are only a few decades old. These are regarded as purebred dogs and have become firm favorites worldwide. The Corgi and the Beagle are among these breeds, both highly valued for their skills in herding or hunting.
It’s important to remember that even though these dogs are familiar to us today, at one time, they would have been new and different. They would have most likely been hybrids of other breeds around at the time. Why is this important?
Well, hybrids have become very popular in recent times, with a whole host of designer dogs appearing on the scene. Many of these can’t be registered with kennel clubs because they aren’t pure breeds, or they don’t have a designated ‘parent club.’
Many pure breed enthusiasts dislike the idea of hybrids, referring to them as mutts that are polluting traditional dog breeds or even risking their extinction. They claim that these dogs risk inheriting genetic faults and health problems.
While this is a possibility, it ignores the fact that all traditional ‘pure’ breeds have common health conditions that have been passed down through countless generations, despite breeders’ best efforts to eliminate them.
The fact is, selective breeding has resulted in these conditions and created physical traits that cause some breeds to suffer. Wherever you stand on this argument, designer dogs are here to stay.
With this in mind, let’s look at the Corgi Beagle mix! To do this properly, we need to take a quick look at the parent breeds that make up this beautiful pooch.
The Beagle Dog
Originally bred to hunt hares and rabbits, the Beagle belongs to the hound category of dogs.
Although it comes in a wide variety of colors (11 standard colors and 14 non-standard, according to the AKC!), the most common is probably the classic tricolor of black, white, and tan seen in most hound type dogs.
Beagles usually measure between 13 and 15 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 20 and 30 pounds.
They are fairly affectionate towards family members but not perhaps to the extent of a breed like the Golden Retriever. However, they are very happy dogs and are great with kids and other dogs. This is perhaps why they have been at #6 in the AKC top 200 dogs for at least eight years!
Beagles are smart and energetic, needing plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to keep them happy and healthy.
They are also playful and mischievous, with a real sense of fun.
One thing to watch for is their tendency to bark, as this can become tiresome.
As always, the best way to curb any unwanted behavior is through obedience training and socialization at an early age.
Now we’ll look at the Corgi breeds.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Favorite of England’s Queen Elizabeth II, this little dog has worked its way into the hearts of millions of people, including Americans. Over the years, it has worked its way slowly to #13 in the AKC top 200 dogs, and it’s fair to say that Queen Liz might have had something to do with this.
The Pembroke Corgi has a long history, with their ancestors arriving in the UK around a thousand years ago. They were developed for herding cattle in the rugged Welsh hills, as well as finding use as watchdogs.
Their surprisingly deep barks were enough to warn of intruders and wild animals, as well as raising the alarm. This trait remains in today’s Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and they make excellent watchdogs.
These are very affectionate dogs that just love to be around you always. They are good with kids, but it’s always best to watch out for that herding instinct as they can sometimes resort to nipping. This tactic was once used to get straying cattle into line and is part of the reason for their short legs, as the dogs could avoid a swift kick from an angry cow!
They are generally okay with other dogs and people, although socialization is always a good idea.
They are happy, playful dogs with pretty high energy levels. They enjoy a good long walk, but their little legs make long-distance running difficult.
Pembrokes have a short double coat that sheds a great deal. Seriously, they shed a lot throughout the year, and you need to work hard to get rid of all that hair in your home.
This coat comes in five standard colors, usually with white markings. Red and white is probably the most common.
Pembrokes have an average weight of up to 28 pounds for females and 30 pounds for males. They usually measure between 10 and 12 inches at the shoulder.
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi
Although they look very similar, these breeds have their differences. The Pembroke originated in Pembrokeshire, hence the name, and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi hails from Cardigan (or Ceredigion, in Welsh).
This is the older of the two breeds by far, possibly by at least a thousand years. However, its purpose was the same: herding cattle in rough, inhospitable terrain. The two breeds have been mixed at times over the centuries, but each has been recognized as a separate breed since the early 1900s.
The Cardigan Corgi is heavier, with a more robust skeletal structure. Males usually weigh between 30 and 38 pounds, while females weigh from 25 to 34 pounds.
These Corgis aren’t as popular as the Pembroke, sitting at #68 of 200 in the AKC list of most popular dog breeds.
There’s no clear reason why this should be, other than the possibility that people prefer the Pembroke because of its royal connections.
It could also be that they are not quite as affectionate as the Pembroke, although they still love their families. It’s just that they are generally more independent. They are slightly better with kids but not so welcoming of other dogs.
Cardigan Corgis are just as playful and energetic, with the same level of energy. However, they aren’t as alert and watchful as the Pembroke. That doesn’t mean they are any less vocal! These dogs will bark at everything if you allow them to.
They have a medium-length double coat that comes in many more colors than the Pembroke, although only five are listed as standard by the AKC. Again, red and white is probably the most common color.
Cardigans have a fox-like tail, while Pemrokes sometimes have a bobtail (a tiny stub that occurs naturally due to centuries of tail docking) or have their tail docked as pups. Tail docking is banned in many countries as it is regarded as cruel and unnecessary, so you will now see Pembrokes with long tails these days.
What Is A Corgi Beagle Mix Called?
Some people call it the Corgi Beagle mix or Beagle Corgi mix, while others have named it the Beagi or the Corgeagle.
It’s more difficult with crossbreed dogs, as they usually can’t be registered with kennel clubs, so they don’t have an official name.
Which one do you think is best? Beagi seems to be the favorite at the moment, so we’ll just have to wait and see!
The Beagi Dog
In the title for this section, we’ve gone with the name that’s the current favorite, but we’ll use some of the others further along (except for Corgeagle, as it sounds a bit clumsy and possibly a bit like a type of bird!).
Let’s start with the obvious question: what is a Beagi?
It’s a designer dog that’s a cross between a purebred Welsh Corgi and a purebred Beagle.
And what does it look like?
Typically, it has the head of a Beagle, complete with floppy ears, and the torso and short legs of the Corgi! Its tail will be erect and curly, also like the Corgi.
However, unlike purebred dogs, mixed breeds are more difficult to predict in terms of their physical appearance and even their temperament. This is especially the case with first-generation pups.
Because of this, Beagi dogs might look very different from each other, even if they’re from the same litter. It all depends on the genes they inherit from the parent breeds. This can be seen in the muzzle, as some will resemble the square shape of the Beagle, and others will have the fox-like tapered muzzle of the Corgi.
They will probably measure somewhere between 10 and 16 inches at the shoulder and will rarely grow any larger than this.
They have a soft, thick double coat that sheds moderately. This will need brushing every other day to keep loose hair under control.
In terms of color, take your pick! They are often two shades, such as red and white, and sometimes with blends of brown, black, and red.
Finally, they have hazel or deep brown eyes.
Corgi Beagle Mix Weight
Your Corgi Beagle mix will soon reach his or her adult weight, and this will be somewhere in the region of 10 to 20 pounds. Females will usually be lighter than males.
It’s important to keep a close watch on their weight as they can easily become obese, which can cause many health problems.
Although the Beagi will probably not be as long in the body as the Corgi parent, there’s a chance that it will still encounter problems because of its short legs and long torso. This puts stress on the joints that can lead to arthritis and inflammation.
It’s important to feed your Beagi the right amount of food, and this should be high-quality dog food, never the cheapest you can find. Do some research to find the best one for your furry friend, and speak to your vet if you need advice on how much to give them.
Feeding them two or three smaller meals throughout the day is better than giving them one large meal.
Treats should always ideally be healthy, and things like puppuccinos should be limited to rare occasions. This isn’t only because of weight-watching, all dogs are lactose intolerant to some degree, so this can give them an upset stomach.
Although you might feel as if you’re being mean to your dog by withholding treats like this, you are doing them a favor. After all, you want a healthy dog that’s going to stay with you for a long time!
Corgi Beagle Mix Personality
Just like humans, every dog has its own personality, and it’s important to remember this. Also, you will help to shape your pup’s character in the way you treat him in those early stages of development. Give them a positive, nurturing, and loving environment, and you’re more likely to have a happy, well-adjusted adult dog.
Even so, you can expect your Corgi Beagle mix to inherit many of the traits of the Corgi and Beagle parents.
Beagles are known for their fun-loving, happy nature. They are mischievous and strong-willed, and they love to be kept active.
Corgi dogs are famous for their friendly, affectionate nature, and they are as playful as the Beagle, so get ready for some fun! There are several differences between the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi in terms of their physical appearance and personality, so we’ll deal with these a little further on.
These feisty little dogs have been described as being tenacious, protective, and smart. There’s a good chance they’ll want to be the center of attention and will expect to be allowed to join in any family fun and games.
Generally, they’ll get on with family members of all ages, from small kids to seniors. They’ll also be okay with other dogs, but early socialization will help them to be more accepting.
One of the biggest concerns will be their prey drive and herding instinct. Beagles were originally used for hunting hares, and Corgis were cattle-herders. This means that your Beagi might chase after any small animals, including the pet cat or rabbit.
And their Corgi side will have them rounding up small children and animals, possibly nipping at them as they go.
Both of these behaviors can be overcome using obedience training.
Beagi Health Concerns
It’s not something that any dog owner wants to think about, but it’s always wise to be aware of what health problems your pup might face. If you know what to expect, then you can look out for the signs and symptoms, and you can get your furry friend the help it needs. Also, it pays to be prepared financially.
So, what health problems might the Corgi Beagle mix suffer from? We’ve listed a few of the more common ones here:
Hip dysplasia affects millions of dogs of all breeds. It is caused by a malformed hip joint that makes the bones grind together as the dog walks. This results in inflammation of the joints, leading to arthritis as the dog gets older.
Obesity is a very common problem, especially in older dogs. Most dog owners continue feeding their pets the same amount of food even though they are not as active. Treats and unhealthy human foods often play a role in obesity.
Being overweight puts stress on the heart and joints, leading to many other health issues.
Epilepsy has many causes, usually as a result of poisoning, trauma, or cancer. However, the cause is often unknown, and this applies to most cases of canine seizures. This is usually managed using medication.
Ear infections are common, especially in dogs with floppy ears. Wax and dirt start to accumulate, and the warm, damp conditions allow bacteria to thrive. Infections can start in the outer ear but soon work their way further in, potentially resulting in permanent damage to the dog’s hearing.
Hypothyroidism is an underactive thyroid gland that causes a dog’s metabolism to slow down. When this happens, the gland doesn’t produce enough hormones for the body to function properly.
Dogs with this condition tend to be lethargic and lack energy. They will gain weight even though they lose their appetite. You’ll also notice changes in their coat and skin, such as hair loss and dry, itchy patches.
Progressive retinal atrophy usually affects older dogs, eventually causing blindness. Night blindness is the first stage, and the dog will stumble into obstacles. There is no cure, so treatment is aimed at preparing the dog for living with blindness.
Intervertebral disc disease is a problem for dogs with long bodies and short legs, like the Corgi and the Dachshund.
This condition affects the soft discs that sit between the backbones, causing them to rupture or calcify. Either way, it’s a painful disease that can result in paralysis of the hind legs.
Degenerative myelopathy is similar to the condition above, as it can cause loss of hind limb use. Sadly, there is no cure at the moment. Most dogs live for between 6 months and 3 years after being diagnosed with this condition.
Although some of these sound scary, there’s no reason to expect that your Beagi puppy will suffer from them. You can do your bit by, first of all, getting your dog from a responsible, ethical breeder.
Then you need to commit to a regular grooming regime that includes brushing and checking your pup’s ears and eyes. You need to brush his teeth and take him for a health check at least once every six months.
Don’t overfeed your dog and keep unhealthy treats to a minimum. Avoid giving them fried foods or anything fatty.
Never let them eat chocolate, onions, garlic, raisins, or anything too sugary. Definitely avoid anything with the artificial sweetener xylitol in it, as this is toxic to your dog.
While you might think you’re giving him a treat, you could be doing irreparable damage to his health and shortening his lifespan.
Beagle Corgi Mix Lifespan

Beagles and Corgis have a similar life expectancy, somewhere between 12 and 15 years (although some sources put the Beagle as low as 10 years).
This means that the Corgi Beagle mix will be much the same, potentially stretching this further because they are hybrid dogs.
Because of the way that genetics works, some health conditions can only be passed onto the pup if both parents carry the gene responsible. If only one gene is passed on, there’s a good chance that the pup will avoid having this condition. And with hybrids, because it involves separate breeds, the odds of both genes being present are further decreased.
How Much Is A Corgi Beagle Mix?
In terms of pricing, it’s looking pretty good!
Although it’s impossible to pin down an exact price, a basic search shows that you’ll pay an average of between $200 and $600 for one of these beautiful mix-breed dogs. If the parents are show-quality dogs, then you might pay up to $1,000, maybe a bit more.
Anyone who’s bought dogs (especially pedigrees) in the past knows that you can expect to pay at least $1,000, and sometimes upwards of $2,000. For example, a Pug might cost between $1,500 and $2,500, or a German Shepherd between $1,000 and $2,000.
So, why is this breed so cheap? Is it a reflection of its quality? Is there something wrong with it?
Having explored the Corgi Beagle mix, we can honestly say that the answer to these last two questions is an emphatic NO. This very reasonable price is not the result of any flaw or defect in its physical body or character.
The truth is that dog prices are weird. They are affected by so many factors, such as the location of the breeder and whether there are many others in the area. The sex of the dog plays a part, too, as some breeders charge more for females.
Then there’s the fact that this is a relatively new hybrid that isn’t in demand yet. If this changes, then you might see prices rise in line with demand.
Humans love their fashions and trends. Some of the most popular designer dogs these days are small enough to carry or fit in a purse, mostly because a handful of celebrities are into micro-dogs. The Corgi Beagle mix is small but not that small.
How Much Does A Corgi Cost?
The average price of a Corgi (of either breed) is between $1,000 to $2,500.
That’s quite a difference when compared with the price of the Corgi Beagle mix! This proves the point about popular and purebred dogs being generally more expensive.
Traditional breeds are well established, with long lines of ancestry and pedigrees. These breeding lines take time to develop, and breeding is an expensive business when done properly.
It’s difficult to call, but if some designer breeds become popular for long enough, then they may be accepted as purebred dogs. Over time, the prices for these breeds may well match those of any other purebred dog.

Choosing the right breeder is vitally important, as this could mean the difference between a healthy Beagi puppy and a sickly one.
Not only will this be upsetting and disappointing, but it could also cost you thousands of dollars in vet bills for treatment aside from the initial cost of buying the dog. And you can pretty much guarantee that the breeder won’t care about your complaints if this happens.
There are responsible breeders out there, and it’s up to you to find one.
One of the best ways is through reviews and testimonials, although you should be aware that these can be faked, especially online. Word-of-mouth endorsements are best, especially from people you know.
Once you have found a breeder that looks promising, arrange a visit. Ask questions and see if they’ll show you around. If they are happy with this, then you know they have nothing to hide!
Don’t take offense if they ask you questions. In fact, you should be pleased, as this is a good sign that they care about their pup’s welfare.
Finally, check what they offer in terms of health guarantees and health screening. Some will even take the pup back if there are any problems.
Never go ahead unless you are 100% happy!
Corgi Beagle Mix Puppy
Beagle Corgi mix puppies are as fragile as they are cute. They need a lot of care, love, and attention, and you will be expected to provide this.
Good breeders won’t release pups until they are between 8 and 12 weeks old. Even so, they can be demanding, relying on you for everything as you have taken the place of their mother.

Getting a dog can be problematic if there’s an allergy sufferer in the home. For some time now, the term hypoallergenic has been thrown around but has unfortunately become used as a marketing pitch. Breeders have used this label to sell dogs as allergy-free, but that isn’t what it means at all!
So, what is the real meaning of this word? Well, anything that is hypoallergenic is less likely to provoke an allergic reaction. It does not mean that it is allergy-free. Allergy-free dogs do not exist!
Some people are allergic to the proteins in the dog’s dander (dry skin flakes), saliva, and urine. This gets stuck to loose hairs on the dog’s coat, which then fall out around our homes.
When we come into contact with them, our immune systems sometimes overreact and produce histamine, which is why we have itchy eyes, a runny nose, sneezing fits, and even a skin rash.
Certain breeds, such as the Poodle, have been celebrated as hypoallergenic for many years, and people will buy Poodle mixes over other breeds because of this. How has the Poodle earned this fame?
They don’t shed as much as other dogs, they don’t produce as much dander as some breeds, and they don’t suffer from allergies themselves. They do shed, despite claims to the contrary, but the loose hairs get stuck in their curly coat, so they can be brushed out and disposed of rather than collecting on your sofa!
So, to get the facts straight: any dog can cause an allergic reaction. Don’t get too hung up on whether it’s hypoallergenic or not. There’s a good chance that if you only have mild symptoms, you can easily avoid being affected if you brush your dog regularly and invest in a good-quality vacuum cleaner that’s designed to cope with pet hair.
These usually have a HEPA filter to cut down the chances of allergens in the air.
Corgi Beagle Mix: The Verdict
Is the Beagi the ultimate family dog?
For some families, definitely! This dog would ideally suit an active family that loves being outdoors. He’s always up for fun and games and will keep you laughing and smiling at his antics.
He’ll love every minute spent with you and will be unhappy when excluded or left home alone. And he’ll let you know this by barking non-stop. This dog would perhaps be better suited for a family where at least one person is always usually home.
You’ll need to make sure he has at least an hour or so of daily exercise, including long walks and playtime. You’ll need to brush him two or three times a week and check his eyes and ears for infections. You’ll have to clean his teeth and clip his toenails to stop them from getting too long.
Training might be hard work but has to be done unless you want your pup to chase everything, including small family pets. One of the reasons behind the creation of this breed was to improve the trainability of the Beagle, and this seems to have worked!
Most Beagis will respond to firm, consistent training, resulting in a wonderful, affectionate companion that is eager to please you. Once you’ve conquered this, you’ll have around 15 years of love and companionship.
Overall, the Beagi makes an excellent family pet. If you don’t mind that it’s a mix dog, and you can commit to all that’s involved in caring for him properly, then it might just be the one for you.
