Weimaraner Pitbull Mix: Complete Crossbreed Guide

Weimaraner Pitbull Mix: Complete Crossbreed Guide

Do you love crossbreeds? There are many things that make mixed breed dogs a better choice than purebred ones.

Not only are they healthier than purebred dogs, but many would say that mixed breed dogs are friendlier and much more loveable. This is because they possess the best qualities of both parent breeds.

But, what happens when you combine two dogs that are not known for many good traits, such as a Weimaraner and a Pitbull?

A Weimaraner Pitbull mix is one of the many crossbreeds you can find. However, it isn’t the most popular one, as it has two parent breeds that are known for their somewhat problematic behavior.

Still, the truth is rather different, as both breeds are simply misunderstood and not aggressive, no matter what many people think.

In fact, aggression is strictly against the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) breed standard for Weimaraners, as well as against the breed standard for kennel clubs that recognize American Pitbull Terriers.

A Weimaraner Pitbull mix is one of the many hybrid dogs on the market currently. Once you learn more about these amazing dogs, I am certain you’ll start liking them, as well.

If you fancy crossbreeds, you’re in the right place. Here’s everything you need to know about a canine like no other – the Weimaraner Pitbull mix.

Weimaraner Pitbull Mix Puppy

A Weimaraner Pitbull puppy can be challenging to run across. They are not as common as your standard crossbreeds, such as a Golden Retriever Poodle mix or a German Shepherd Siberian Husky mix.

This is a crossbreed of a purebred Weimaraner and a purebred Pitbull. Or rather – a Weimaraner and an American Pitbull Terrier.

This crossbreed is also known as the Pittmaraner.

Pitbull isn’t a single breed. This is an umbrella term used for five breeds with fairly similar characteristics. These five breeds are:

• The American Pitbull Terrier.

• The American Staffordshire Terrier.

• The American Bully.

• Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

• American Bulldog.

However, most people are thinking of the American Pitbull Terrier when they are talking about Pitbulls. This is also the dog breed that is used to create a Weimaraner Pitbull mix.

While you can technically use other Pitbull breeds to get a Weimaraner Pitbull mix puppy, this dog will no longer be the right representative of the crossbreed, as other types of Pitbulls have different characteristics.

Another important thing to be mindful of is that most of the time, the male Pitbull is used to mate with a Weimaraner female.

This is because the Weimaraner is a slightly larger breed, so a female Weimaraner won’t have problems giving birth to Pitbull-sized puppies.

If the female is a small dog but puppies end up being the size of a larger dog breed’s puppy, she might have problems birthing them as they’ll be too large for her body, especially her pelvis.

This is why it is a standard breeding practice to choose a larger dog breed to be the mother dog, and a smaller one to be the father.

Fortunately, the difference in size between the Pitbull and the Weimaraner isn’t big, so there should be no problems even if the sexes are switched.

Weimaraner Pitbull Mix History

To understand a dog breed, you must understand how it came to be and the history behind it.

Each dog breed was once considered a hybrid breed. Dog breeds came to be when humans decided to mix specific breeds so they can get dogs with certain traits required to fulfill some tasks.

For example, a Labrador Retriever was created when European settlers in Newfoundland crossbred St. John’s Water Dogs with British hunting dog breeds. This gave them the traits of an amazing water retriever.

On the other hand, Dalmatians were created when the pointer breeds from Croatia were crossbred with spotted Great Danes. This created these amazing hunting dogs and gave them that unique look they are known for.

Over time, these mixed dogs became so common and they were bred for so many generations that a certain breed standard was created. This meant the breed could be registered and, finally, be considered purebred.

When speaking about dogs that are known as crossbreeds today, things get a bit more challenging. To fully understand their history, you need to know the history of the parent breeds. This is because they are so new some would argue they don’t have any history on their own yet.

Without further ado, here is the history of the Weimaraner and the Pitbull:

The Weimaraner

The Weimaraner is a large dog breed that originated in Germany. It got its name from the court of the Grand Duke Karl August, located in Weimar city.

This dog breed was used as a gun dog and a hunting dog. In fact, due to their size, hunters used these dogs to go boar hunting.

The Weimaraner is also known under the name Gray Ghost, due to its grayish eye and coat color.

It wasn’t until the late 1920s that the Weims were brought to the U.S., where they gained popularity thanks to the famous people who adored them, such as Dwight D. Eisenhower, Dick Clark, and Grace Kelly.

The Pitbull

The Pitbull is a dog originating from Great Britain, and they are descendants of the Old English Terrier and the Old English Bulldog.

While these pups were originally bred to be hunting dogs, over time the gangs started using these strong and courageous pups as fighting dogs. In fact, their history of dog fights is the reason behind the disdain some people feel for these pups.

While fighting pits are outlawed in all U.S. states, many people still use these dogs for fights. This is why none of the Pitbull breeds are allowed to be registered within the AKC.

Despite this, many people still use Pitbulls as family dogs and companions due to their loyalty and love of humans.

Weimaraner Pitbull Mix Appearance

It is rather challenging to predict what a crossbreed dog is going to look like. Crossbreeds can look like either of their parent breeds, like a perfect mix of both, or they might look like one parent but with a few features of the other one.

Pitbulls and Weimaraners are two dogs that don’t look similar. Quite the opposite – they are quite easy to differentiate one from the other.

Pitbulls are muscular dogs with square-shaped heads and wide muzzles. They don’t have a standard flat nose, but they might be confused with dogs that have.

These are colorful dogs that can come in any coat color and pattern imaginable. This includes brindle, merle, tri-color, black, and so on.

Most Pits have their ears cropped, although this practice has slowly been outlawed.

On the other hand, Weimaraners are muscular yet slim dogs with big, floppy ears and an elongated muzzle. They’d look rather similar to German Shorthaired Pointers if not for their unique grey coat color.

The Weimaraner Pitbull mix can look anything between these two. Most of these pups are born with floppy ears, and owners usually choose not to crop them, although they will usually still dock their tails.

They will usually look like somewhat shorter Weimaraners but with a bit flatter muzzle and rounded heads, although there isn’t a true rule to this.

Some might also look like Weimaraners with the Pitbull head and face.

Blue Nose Weimaraner Pitbull Mix

Many experts consider there are two types of Pitbulls – blue nose Pitbull and red nose Pitbull. As you can guess, this is determined by the color of their nose.

The genetics behind the blue nose Pitbulls is the same as the genetics behind the Weimaraner grey coat colors. As such, most Weimaraner Pitbull mix dogs are considered blue-nose.

In fact, most breeders will intentionally breed blue nose Pitbulls with Weimaraners to ensure this beautiful grey coat color stays within the breed.

This nose color is usually connected with grey or blue eyes, which is another reason why these pups are so beloved.

Red Nose Pitbull Weimaraner Mix

Red nose Pitbulls, as their name suggests, have a red, or rather a liver nose. This is caused by a dilution gene – a similar gene to the one that causes blue noses.

However, this particular gene will turn the dog’s nose into a liver instead of a blue color, their coat will be in liver shades, and their eyes will be amber or green, although they might be blue on occasion.

Red nose Pitbulls are rarely crossbred with Weimaraners, as this can lead to the loss of greatly admired grey colors.

Still, some breeders will attempt to create red nose Pittmaraners, although there is no guarantee that this crossbreed will be successful. If you combine a red nose Pitbull with a Weimaraner, their litter has a 50% chance of inheriting a red nose.

Weimaraner Pitbull Mix Size

Predicting the size of a mixed breed dog is another challenge both the breeder and the owner face. This is because the offspring can vary in size between the height of both of his parents.

For example, a Chihuahua Vizsla crossbreed can be a small dog, a medium dog, or even a large dog!

With the Weimaraner Pitbull mix, fortunately, this isn’t the case. Both dogs are of a fairly similar size, even though the Pitbull dog is considered to be medium-sized while the Weimaraner is a large breed.

An adult Weimaraner can reach the height of 25 to 27 inches and weigh 55 to 90 pounds.

Pitbulls, on the other hand, grow on average 18 to 21 inches, and their average weight is 30 – 60 pounds.

As such, a Weimaraner Pitbull mix can grow to be anywhere between 18 and 27 inches, and they can weigh between 30 – 90 pounds.

Weimaraner Pitbull Mix Personality

Many people interested in the Weimaraner Pitbull mix want to know about the personality of these dogs, as both of these canines are followed by a bad reputation.

It’s very important to note that the dog’s behavior will usually depend on the way you’re training him. If you don’t train your dog properly, both the Rottweiler and the Beagle can be equally aggressive.

However, some temperamental characteristics will be up to genetics, and it is up to you to correct or to nurture them.

Pitbulls are active dogs that love their owners very much. They are affectionate and love to please people. In fact, they love people so much they are prone to separation anxiety.

These pups are loyal and intelligent, while also being silly and courageous. However, they can be rather stubborn, and they’ll love doing things their own way.

The downside is that they are territorial and defensive, and they are so protective of their owners they might not like anyone who approaches them.

They are also wary of strangers, and, unless properly socialized, they won’t do really well with animals they don’t know. When you consider the dog’s history as a fighting dog, this shouldn’t be a surprise.

Weimaraners are friendly yet fearless dogs that will make amazing family companions. They are intelligent yet very obedient, and they’ll love to please their owners in any way they can – although they, too, have a bit of a stubborn streak when they feel like it.

These are dogs with high energy levels that require lots of exercise. Otherwise, they can become destructive and their high prey drive can take over.

These are affectionate dogs that can deal with strangers pretty well. They are rather patient for such energetic dogs, but they don’t tolerate being alone for too long.

Also, they are very alert, and they’ll notice an intruder no matter the time of day.

As such, you can expect a Weimaraner Pitbull mix to be an energetic and affectionate dog that won’t want to leave your side. These pups will get anxious if left alone, and they will want to be a part of everything you do – which can be challenging for a dog of their size.

At the same time, they’ll have a high prey drive and they can be wary of strangers, which is why they might require some additional socialization.

Weimaraner Pitbull Mix Health

In general, mixed breed dogs have better health compared to purebred ones. This is due to something called hybrid vigor.

Hybrid vigor occurs when there is a wide variety of genes a puppy can pick up from. This reduces the chances of a dog inheriting some genetic health problems.

When there are many different genes your pooch might inherit, there are higher chances he will inherit the good ones. For example, this means that a Chow Chow Boxer mix is healthier compared to a purebred Chow Chow and a purebred Boxer.

At the same time, though, there are chances that a crossbreed might inherit any health issue its parent is prone to. In theory, this increases the number of conditions a dog can get.

Still, Weimaraner Pitbull mix dogs are healthy canines. Despite this, they might get some health conditions, such as:

• Hip dysplasia.

• Elbow dysplasia.

• Gastric torsion volvulus (bloat).

• Hypothyroidism.

• Allergies.

• Skin conditions.

Because of this, it’s important to make sure you don’t skip regular vet checkups, even when you have a seemingly healthy dog.

Weimaraner Pitbull Mix Lifespan

Due to their good health, the Weimaraner Pitbull mix has a fairly long life expectancy, especially when you consider their size.

These dogs can live up to 10 – 14 years!

Of course, to ensure your doggie lives as long as possible, you need to feed them with high-quality dog food and make sure they get enough exercise.

Weimaraner Pitbull Mix Maintenance

One of the things many aspiring dog owners forget about is whether a dog breed is easy to keep and to take care of.

Dogs aren’t toys that you can buy just so you can put them in a corner and forget about them. They need care and financial investment. If you lack the time or the funds to properly take care of your pooch, you cannot afford to keep them.

So, what about Pittmaraners? Are these dogs challenging to keep? To get the answer, we need to look at the few things separately. But one thing’s certain – these are not good dogs for first-time owners.

Is Weimaraner Pitbull Mix Easy To Groom?

Grooming is essential for all dogs, no matter the length of their coat. Without proper grooming, your family pet will shed and their coat might mat and tangle.

Fortunately, Weimaraner Pitbull mix dogs are easy to groom. These pups have a short coat that isn’t prone to mats and tangles.

However, they are moderate shedders, which means there will be lots of cleaning up to do. They will leave hairs everywhere!

While the shedding amount isn’t as bad as in Corgis or Retrievers, it is still enough to trigger an allergic reaction in people with dog allergies.

This is because neither the Pitbull nor the Weimaraner breed isn’t hypoallergenic nor non-shedding. When the parents experience a certain amount of shedding, you can expect something similar from their puppy.

Also, make sure you get the right brush for this dog breed. The best dog brush should be gentle enough not to harm the dog’s sensitive skin, but strong enough to detangle and pick up any loose hairs.

Some people love to take their dogs to professional groomers. Others don’t love to give money for such a service, but they are forced to do so as their pups are prone to tangles or bad odors.

As for the Weimaraner Pitbull mix, you don’t have to take this dog to the groomer – unless you want to. All they require is some weekly brushing, and even novice owners can deal with this.

Is Weimaraner Pitbull Mix Easy To Train?

A Weimaraner Pitbull mix is an intelligent dog that will love to do what its owners tell him to. It is able to learn tricks rather quickly, and you can help them learn how to behave in no time.

However, this is also a stubborn dog. If they don’t feel like it, Pittmaraners won’t do a single word you say.

This can also happen if you’re too harsh on your dog or if something distracts them from your lessons. The Weimaraner Pitbull mix is a gentle dog that requires people to be polite with them.

As such, Weimaraner Pitbull mix dogs can be a bit challenging to train, but not too much. While they are capable of learning new tricks, they get bored with their lessons rather quickly, and they’ll stop with the training whether you like it or not.

Because of this, if you’re training your Weimaraner Pitbull mix, you need to include positive reinforcements instead of punishing your pup when he is behaving badly.

A dog won’t properly understand why they are being punished, especially if their ‘crime’ happened a few minutes or more ago. They don’t have long memory spams and such occasions are not important for them.

However, if you use positive reinforcements, your pup will know that they should keep with the good behavior – while, if they are behaving badly, they’ll go home and do nothing.

Considering how the Pittmareaner is a sensitive doggie, I would advise you try to implement this tactic.

Is Weimaraner Pitbull Mix Dangerous?

A Weimaraner Pitbull mix is a strong dog. This alone is enough to make him appear aggressive. However, this shouldn’t be the case.

A Weimaraner isn’t a dog with such a bad reputation as a Pitbull, but it also isn’t known for being the friendliest of dogs out there.

However, there haven’t been many recorded instances in which a Weimaraner attacked a human or caused any type of trouble.

As for Pitbulls, there have been numerous studies trying to determine whether these pups are more aggressive than the others.

Organizations that want to push the breed ban argue that the breed is responsible for more than half of the dog bites, even though they only make up 6% of the dogs included in the statistics.

On the other hand, many studies indicate that nurturing is the main reason behind the bad behavior Pitbulls have. Pitbull owners love to have these dogs because they want people to think that they own dangerous breeds, so they train them to fit such an image.

Personally, I have an opinion that all dog breeds can be aggressive if you fail to teach them proper behavior. With proper socialization and dog training, all pups can be good dogs.

As such, the Weimaraner Pitbull mix has equal chances of being aggressive as does any other dog breed – purebred or mixed breed. It all comes down to what type of owner you are.

Is Weimaraner Pitbull Mix A Good Family Dog?

A Weimaraner Pitbull mix might be a good family dog, but this entirely depends on what your expectations are.

These pups can be very devoted to their family members and the entire household. They will love you with all your heart, and they’ll do all they can to express this to you.

At the same time, they can do great with kids. Pitbulls were used as nanny dogs for decades, and they are very patient, while Weimaraners feel close to their two-legged pack.

However, you need to be extra careful with small children. Even with the best dog out there, accidents might happen in a split second.

Your child might pull on a dog’s tail or ears or hit him as a joke while you’re not looking.

Dogs don’t understand such jokes and they might mistake the child’s desire to play as an attempt to assert dominance, so they’ll often lash out at a kid who doesn’t know proper communication with dogs.

As such, it’s essential to socialize your pooch from an early age, while also teaching your kid how to behave around dogs and other pets.

Also, monitor their playtime, even when the kids aren’t as young. You can never know when an accident with such large dogs might happen.

Is Weimaraner Pitbull Mix Good With Other Pets?

A Weimaraner Pitbull mix can tolerate other pets and dogs. However, I would advise making sure your Pittmaraner is the only pet in your household.

These pups have a rather high prey drive, so they might attack smaller animals and dog breeds after mistaking them for a toy.

Both parent breeds were bred to be guard dogs and watchdogs. This means it is in their genes to be wary of strangers. The same can be said for their offspring.

Also, they are rather territorial, and this can lead to same-sex aggression – something that is never fun.

Still, you can teach a Weimaraner Pitbull mix how to behave with other dogs. If trained from a young age, these puppies can make amazing companion dogs.

Weimaraner Pitbull Mix Puppies For Sale

Photo from: @jordynthedogjennings

Finding Weimaraner Pitbull mix puppies for sale is not an easy task. There are only a few breeders that sell this crossbreed. However, locating them isn’t impossible if you know where to start.

Before you do so, it’s important to note that no crossbreed is recognized by the AKC, United Kennel Club (UKC), or any other major kennel club. This means that you shouldn’t ask for puppies to be registered – although it would help if the Weimaraner parent is.

You need to look for healthy dogs that seem to be well-behaved. As socialization and dog training from an early age is essential for the dog’s proper development, this is something you need to pay attention to.

Finally, when choosing the dog from the litter, try to go for the middle ground. Don’t choose a dog that is bullying other puppies, or a shy puppy that seems to sit on the side without any further interactions.

Both sides of the spectrum can indicate some behavioral problems. If you’re paying money for your new pet, make sure you pay for the best dog possible, and not for a pooch that is from day one doomed to be a challenge.

Weimaraner Pitbull Mix Breeders

An important thing to note is that not all breeders are the same. Quite the opposite – some are way better or way worse than the others.

In general, there are three places where you can get your Weimaraner Pitbull mix puppies for sale:

• Reputable breeders.

• Backyard breeders.

• Puppy mills.

You can also adopt a dog from the shelter, but I’ll talk about this in a minute.

Reputable breeders have thorough breeding programs that forbid dogs with any flaws or health problems to further reproduce. As proof of this, they’ll provide you with health guarantees and certificates that will state that the dog has been health-checked.

These breeders have experience in their job – most notably, they know how to breed crossbreeds. This is important, as breeding mixed breed dogs isn’t the same as breeding purebred ones.

Backyard breeders look similar to reputable breeders, but they lack the knowledge and the experience to breed healthy, high-quality dogs.

They often mean well but don’t know how to select parent dogs for their breeding programs, and they don’t conduct health tests. Whether they don’t want to spend extra money or that or they don’t think health tests are necessary is up to them.

A backyard breeder likely won’t have any paperwork to back up their sale, and this is the first red flag you should be wary of.

Also, backyard breeders often sell their dogs on various online websites instead of having their own.

Finally, you have puppy mills. As their name might suggest, puppy mills are locations where puppies are produced in large quantities. Yes, it’s as bad as it sounds.

Pet mills look at dogs as a way to profit. If it was just that, it wouldn’t be that bad. Any type of breeder will want to make some money on top of the expenses.

However, puppy mills try to not have any expenses when it comes to raising their dogs. They don’t care too much about the food quality, and they’ll allow their dogs to live on dirty, unsanitary premises.

Also, they’ll often overbreed the mother dogs to ensure there are always puppies for sale.

As a result, puppies coming from puppy mills are often small, weak, or sickly.

Puppy mills will often sell their dogs in pet stores, which is why I am strongly against such practices.

If you’d like to adopt a Weimaraner Pitbull mix, I have to say that this crossbreed is challenging to run into. There are not many Pittmaraners, and even fewer are waiting in the shelter.

However, if you happen to run into one, you should know that adopting a Weimaraner Pitbull mix is just as good an option as buying from a reputable breeder.

Sure, you still won’t know the genetic background or the history of the dog you’re buying. However, you’ll be providing a new home to an abandoned pup, and this is always a good idea.

Why Do Breeders Matter?

Some dog lovers are against breeders. They claim that these people are simply taking money from people, using dogs for profit, and leading to a higher number of abandoned animals on the streets.

The truth is quite the opposite. Reputable breeders are helping keep dogs off the streets as many will ensure their dogs find a new home in case their owners can no longer take care of them.

Breeders can also help eliminate some health conditions from the dog’s bloodline or even the entire dog breed. They do this by conducting various health screenings and preventing the breeding of unhealthy dogs.

At the same time, they are trying to create a stable crossbreed that will result in dogs that have a breed standard.

By doing this, they are helping the crossbreed they’re producing get registered by major kennel clubs, which can lead to many advantages.

Not just that, but when you’re dealing with dogs that come with stereotypes, you’d want to have as many puppies that can prove everyone otherwise.

A reputable breeder can make this happen by removing any dogs that behave aggressively in the slightest. Sure, this isn’t the main way to prevent aggression in dogs, but it can help with ensuring there are no unpredictable bad behaviors.

Controlling the breeding of specific dogs can help improve these canines a lot, and there is nothing wrong with supporting reputable breeders. In fact, by doing so, you’ll help many beloved doggies.

Of course, remember to do your research properly. You probably don’t want to support a breeder who is producing dogs in an unethical manner.

Weimaraner Pitbull Mix Price

Weimaraner and pitbull kissing and playing outdoors

Finally, you’re probably wondering how expensive are Pittmaraners and whether they are more costly than their purebred parents.

Pitbulls are a rather affordable breed. They aren’t registered within kennel clubs, and this alone lowers the costs.

On the other hand, Weimaraners can be costly depending on the breeder, although they are mostly cheap, as well.

They are not as common as Pitbulls and they can be challenging to keep on-premises due to their large size.

However, even Weimaraners are still not as costly as some popular dog breeds, such as Corgis.

The price of these dogs can also depend on many factors. This includes:

The type of breeder – Reputable breeders will sell their dogs at a much higher price than other types of breeders.

Dog’s age – While you should never buy a puppy younger than 8-12 weeks, a general rule is that the younger the dog, the higher the price.

Coat color – Crossbreeds don’t have a breed standard, but this doesn’t mean that there aren’t some rare features that are treasured, such as a coat color or the dog’s size.

Parent’s bloodline – Even though you cannot register or get pedigree papers for the crossbreed puppy, you can still demand proof of the parent dogs’ bloodline – for a fee.

Crossbreed popularity – Popular crossbreeds, such as Goldendoodles, will cost more than unusual ones, such as a Weimaraner Pitbull mix.

As this isn’t a popular mixed breed, many people are treating Pittmaraners like regular mutts. Fortunately for you, this also means their prices are rather low. You can get a Weimaraner Pitbull mix puppy at a price of $500 to $1,000.

When adopting a Weimaraner Pitbull mix, you’ll only be liable for the adoption fee, which is usually $50 – $500.

However, this isn’t where the costs end. You also need to include high-quality dog food, professional dog training, and vet bills, which can get rather high.

It’s essential to be aware that taking care of a dog is a long commitment, and that you need to be able to provide them with everything they could possibly need.

Is A Weimaraner Pitbull Mix A Good Dog For You?

After reading all of this, you may be wondering if a Pittmaraner is a right dog for you. However, no matter what I tell you, this is something only you can know for sure.

A Weimaraner Pitbull mix isn’t a good dog for a first-time owner. These are energetic dogs that require lots of dedication. You’ll need to take them on long hikes and training sessions, while also making sure they are properly socialized and taken care of.

These pups can be unfriendly with other dogs and people they don’t know, and you mustn’t leave them unsocialized. Otherwise, they can be a huge hazard for everyone, including even you!

If you have experience dealing with large, strong dogs, then I say go for it! With proper care, a Weimaraner Pitbull mix can make an amazing family companion.

Sure, these dogs demand some patience and lots of love, but as long as you can provide them with both, you’ll get yourself a loyal guard dog that will hate every second spent away from you.

Creating a crossbreed is a great way of combining the best traits of two or more dog breeds, and the Weimaraner Pitbull mix is a prime example of this.
