Wyoming Rescuer Met A Lab Dog Who Didn’t Know How To Be Held, But A Simple Countdown Changed Everything
After being bred for laboratory research, a dog named Uno didn’t know how to navigate the outside world. But a patient Wyoming rescuer and a simple countdown helped him finally discover the joy of being a dog.
A Historic Rescue Mission

John is the Executive Director of Kindness Ranch Animal Sanctuary in Wyoming.
Last July, his team took part in a historic and monumental mission.
They were involved in one of the largest dog rescues in United States history, helping to save 4,000 dogs bred for laboratory research.
Among those thousands of anxious faces was one very special dog named Uno.
The Loudest Boy In The Room

John and his team hit the road, driving all the way to Virginia to pick up their very first group of animals.
The scale of the rescue was staggering, but Kindness Ranch was ready to help the dogs transition to normal lives.
Amidst the chaos of the massive facility, Uno immediately stood out to John.
The little dog was incredibly vocal, making his presence known to anyone who walked by.
“I set him aside because he was just so loud,” John recalled, noting that Uno desperately wanted out of his enclosure.
Learning How To Be A Dog

By the time the team headed back to Wyoming, they had 32 precious lives on board, including Uno.
Once they arrived at the sanctuary, the reality of Uno’s past became heartbreakingly apparent.
Having been bred for research, he didn’t really trust people at first.
He seemed completely unsure of how to navigate the world around him or interact with humans.
“It’s like he doesn’t know what to do with his body,” John noted.
The Magic Countdown

To help Uno decompress, John would spend quiet time simply sitting with him in his kennel.
He realized the dog needed a predictable routine to feel secure with human contact.
John developed a gentle method, starting to count whenever he wanted to pick the dog up.
“I would count to three, he would start to lift his back legs up, and then I would be able to hold him,” John explained.
Through this patient repetition, Uno gradually began to trust his caretaker.
A First Taste Of Freedom

As Uno’s trust grew, it was time for a major milestone.
The little dog had never touched grass in his entire life.
When he finally got to step outside and feel the earth beneath his paws, his reaction was pure magic.
He got to run in the grass for the very first time, exploring the open space.
A massive, undeniable smile spread across his face as he took in the wonderful new sensation.
A Heart-Melting Decision

That day in the grass changed everything for both of them.
Uno came running right up to John and allowed himself to be picked up.
He was still smiling brightly as John held him, a moment that completely melted the rescuer’s heart.
It was then that John knew Uno already had a forever home.
“I couldn’t let him go,” he admitted, realizing the dog belonged with him.
Guiding A New Sister

Uno officially joined John’s family, becoming the son the father of three daughters had always wanted.
While Uno still has some triggers, like certain loud noises, he has blossomed into a confident companion.
He even took on the role of a comforting guide for his new canine sister, who came from an entirely different facility.
Having learned the ropes himself, Uno patiently helped show her how to be safe and comfortable in a real house.
A Larger-Than-Life Personality

Every week, John sees improvements in Uno’s vibrant personality.
The once-terrified dog is now incredibly playful, spending his days happily chasing a remote control car all over the place.
He also has a hilariously skewed perception of his own stature.
“He doesn’t know his own size,” John joked.
“He thinks he’s six foot tall, 300 pounds.”
Safe, Loved, And Joyful

Uno is now an outgoing shadow who loves meeting new people and having a “job” by John’s side throughout the workday.
The family no longer feels compelled to constantly remind him that he’s safe.
Whether he’s squirming on his back on the couch to get comfortable or jumping into bed with John and his wife, Uno’s body language proves he is finally at peace.
He finds joy in absolutely every moment.
For John, there isn’t anything he wouldn’t do for the brave little dog who changed his life.
