Texas Dog Ozzie Went To The Vet For A Limp, But The X-Rays Revealed Something His Family Never Expected
A devastating diagnosis forces a Texas family to make a tough choice for their beloved dog, leading to an inspiring journey of resilience, community support, and an unbreakable bond.
A Perfect Puppy Seeking A Home

In the summer of 2015, Taylor saw an ad for a puppy in Texas that needed to be re-homed. His previous family was moving somewhere he couldn’t go, so Taylor decided to open her home to him.
The dog, named Ozzie, was absolutely striking with one brown eye and one bright blue eye. He was a bundle of energy, moving at 120 miles per hour and full of life.
For years, Ozzie was Taylor’s constant companion, moving 14 times across four different states and even joining her on her honeymoon. But last September, a sudden change in his step would alter the course of their lives forever.
A Concerning Visit To The Vet

In September of last year, Taylor noticed that Ozzie had started limping. Wanting to be safe, she took him to the vet to get checked out.
The veterinary staff took Ozzie to the back to get some x-rays. About 10 minutes later, the vet returned to the exam room, but she didn’t bring Ozzie with her.
She put the x-rays up on the screen and pointed to a concerning splotch on his leg bone. She gently delivered the devastating news: Ozzie had a tumor, and it was osteosarcoma.
Making A Heartbreaking Choice

Taylor was completely devastated by the diagnosis. She immediately called her husband, who left his meeting at work to rush to her side.
The family was given three difficult options. They could do pain management for a prognosis of about two months, amputate without chemotherapy for four to six months, or choose amputation and chemotherapy for an average of nine to 12 months.
Knowing how much life Ozzie still had in him, they decided to move forward with the amputation and chemotherapy. Thanks to their amazing veterinary team, the amputation was performed that very same day, on October 4th.
The Peanut Butter Toast Surprise

When Taylor went back to pick Ozzie up after the surgery, she was bawling, worried about how her beloved dog would look and feel. The vet tech warned her that it might be hard to see him at first.
But then, the tech shared a detail that brought a smile to Taylor’s face. “He’s in great spirits and just so you know, he ate someone’s peanut butter toast this morning even so,” she told Taylor.
True to his resilient and brave nature, Ozzie walked into the room on his own, wearing his recovery cone. Taylor sat on the vet floor, and Ozzie gently laid down right on top of her.
Adjusting To A New Normal

To help Ozzie recover comfortably, Taylor and her husband set up a mattress topper downstairs. For the next two weeks, they slept on the floor with him so he wouldn’t have to navigate the stairs.
The surgeon had assured them that Ozzie would eventually be basically normal, and he was right. Despite losing a leg, Ozzie proved he still had plenty of energy and was truly thriving.
A month after his diagnosis, they began his chemotherapy treatments. While the journey was daunting, Ozzie tackled it with the same bravery he showed on the day of his surgery.
Navigating The Ups And Downs Of Chemo

Ozzie has completed five rounds of chemotherapy so far. Taylor admits that the actual day of treatment is always hard on him.
He usually feels sick for about three to four hours after the session, then falls into a deep sleep. But when he wakes up, he bounces back incredibly fast.
By the very next day, it is as if nothing happened at all. He enjoys two or three good weeks of normal life before the next chemo day comes around.
A Shared Journey Of Survival

After every single chemo session, Taylor’s dad makes sure Ozzie feels loved from afar. Even though he lives in a different state, he uses Uber Eats to send the sweet dog a special delivery of ice cream.
Whenever he calls to check in, he always asks Taylor, “How’s your son doing?” He understands just how much Ozzie means to her.
But the connection goes deeper than just a grandfather’s love for a family pet. Taylor’s dad was diagnosed with cancer in February of 2016 and has thankfully been in remission ever since.
A Gentle Sister Steps Up

Because of their shared battle, Taylor’s dad feels a profound connection to the dog. Bonding over a similar journey with an animal who can’t speak has been a beautiful source of comfort.
Support has also come from within the home. Two years ago, the family adopted a big, goofy dog named Lulu, who is normally very hyper and loves pawing at people.
However, after Ozzie’s amputation, Lulu’s demeanor completely changed. She became incredibly gentle with him, smelling him more often and seeming to understand that she needed to be careful around her fragile brother.
Getting Back On The Trail

With only one chemo treatment left, Ozzie’s support system continues to shine. The family’s refrigerator is completely covered in get-well cards from people cheering him on.
Knowing how much Ozzie loves to hike, visit the beach, and go kayaking, Taylor started looking for ways to keep him mobile, as the missing leg puts extra weight on his front end.
A friend made a post online, and generous supporters donated money to buy a special carrying bag for Ozzie. Thanks to that bag, they were recently able to take him on a seven-mile hike, carrying him when he needed a rest so he could still enjoy the great outdoors.
A Rock Through It All

Taylor and her husband are dedicated to finding ways for Ozzie to keep doing the things he loves. They know that simply prolonging his life without giving him joy wouldn’t be fair to him.
Through every major life milestone—from Taylor’s engagement to the hotel room after her wedding—Ozzie has been a constant source of stability.
He has been her rock through 14 moves and four different states. Seeing him thrive today is a beautiful reminder of his resilience, and they are cherishing every joyful moment they have together.
