It started with a heartbreaking video clip.

A producer for The Dodo spotted footage of a poor, lonely dog living all by himself in an abandoned house in Missouri.

Knowing the situation was dire, they immediately reached out to Donna at Stray Rescue of St. Louis for help.

With a severe snowstorm barreling toward Missouri, there was absolutely no time to waste.

St. Louis was just hours away from getting hit by a massive winter weather event.

Temperatures were already plummeting, and the wind was howling through the broken windows of the derelict building.

When rescuers arrived at the property, they knew they had to get the dog out before the snow started falling.

They carefully made their way inside, calling out to see if the frightened animal was hiding upstairs.

Trembling In The Cold

They found the large dog huddled on the second floor.

He was absolutely terrified of the newcomers, pressing himself away from them in fear.

The poor pup was trembling violently, completely exposed to the freezing temperatures.

“I had barely been out there five minutes, and my fingers were already frozen,” one rescuer noted, imagining how cold the dog must have been.

Despite his fear, the dog seemed to understand that these people were there to help him.

He was a little bit leery when the rescuer first brought out the leash.

Speaking to him in gentle, reassuring tones, the rescuer slowly approached.

Finally, the brave boy relented and let them slip the leash over his head.

Getting the leash on was only half the battle.

As they made their way toward the stairs, they hit a narrow corner, and the dog suddenly put the brakes on.

He was absolutely terrified to make the turn and head down the steep steps.

Rescuers explained that stray dogs often wander up to second floors to find shelter, only to become too scared to come back down.

The rescuer didn’t rush him, offering patient encouragement instead.

“You got it! C’mon! You were scared to come down, huh?” she coaxed gently.

With a little bit of gentle guidance, the brave dog finally took those terrifying first steps.

Once he started moving, it was clear he was more than ready to be out of that freezing house.

Warming Up To A New Life

They finally made it out to the rescue vehicle, where the heat was waiting.

The horrible, freezing wind of the second floor was finally behind him.

“You’re gonna be nice and warm now, buddy. No more cold,” his rescuer promised.

Safe in the car, the sweet dog began to relax as they drove back to the shelter.

Back at the shelter, the staff named the resilient survivor “Snow Mageddon” in honor of the storm he narrowly escaped.

He quickly proved to be a gentle and loving companion, grateful for his second chance.

It didn’t take long for the perfect family to spot him and fall in love.

In a beautiful twist of fate, Snow Mageddon officially found his forever home on Valentine’s Day—a day perfectly suited for a dog with so much love to give.
