For a dog, being separated from the person they love most can be deeply painful. The familiar rhythm of daily life disappears, the comfort of home is gone, and suddenly everything around them feels unfamiliar and frightening.
Heartbreakingly, some owners do not understand how much this affects their dogs, while others simply refuse to confront it. In recent years, countless pups who once spent years in caring homes have found themselves inside shelters after being surrendered.
That became Chai’s reality. The four-year-old pup was turned over to animal control by her owner with no explanation at all. When a photo captured the sadness on her face, it quickly traveled across social media, reaching thousands of people and leaving them heartbroken.
Yet the image did more than stir sympathy. It also left people wondering about Chai’s breed, with many trying to piece together her history from that one sorrowful photograph.
A Painful Separation

After Chai was surrendered, her shelter photo circulated widely online.
Soon, the image reached Angels Among Us Pet Rescue in Atlanta, Georgia. The team responded immediately, agreeing to take responsibility for the abandoned dog with the mournful eyes.
“She was happy and loving when she arrived but slowly began to shut down,” Jackie Spett, the marketing and development director at Angels, in an interview with Newsweek.
Her decline made it clear that the shelter environment was not suitable for her. The rescue acted quickly, placing her in a foster home in Atlanta.
“Her foster will keep her for a mandatory 14-day quarantine period, and then she can be adopted, as long as she remains healthy and free of any other concerns,” Spett said. “Chai’s foster says she is always on the move, so an active family or individual would be best.”

Though her expression still carried worry, Chai began to relax in the comfort of her foster home. Slowly, her personality started to shine through.
News of her foster placement thrilled her online supporters, who eagerly followed updates. Comments poured in, with many expressing relief that she had found safety. Yet even as people celebrated, one question continued to dominate the conversation.
The Public Continued To Speculate
Two days after Chai settled into foster care, Angels Among Us Pet Rescue shared her story in a Facebook post to update followers and raise awareness.
The post included a playful caption: “Anybody know What Breed I Am?”
That simple question sparked a wave of responses. Some guessed she might be a Dachshund mix, while others suggested a German Shepherd and Labrador blend. Spett noted another popular answer was “the good old Georgia brown dog.”
The post drew widespread attention, with comments filled not only with breed theories but also heartfelt concern for Chai’s future.
“Sweet baby. She is beautiful no matter what breed.” one commenter wrote.
“😢💔♥️🙏🙏🙏.poor sweet baby I pray you get a forever loving home full of love and a loving family ♥️🙏🙏,” another person commented.
And, a third one quipped: “She looks absolutely depressed. Poor baby. How could anyone leave her behind”
While it is difficult to understand how someone could abandon such a gentle soul, the focus remains not on judgment but on the compassion that followed.
What matters most is that caring people stepped in, giving Chai comfort, safety, and the chance at a brighter future, regardless of what anyone believed her breed might be.
