Mornings are rarely quiet for Donna Lochmann, an experienced rescuer with Stray Rescue of St. Louis in Missouri. Emergency calls and risky rescues are often part of her day, and this morning, she set out with the same compassion and determination she always carried.
“A dog awaits and needs our help!” Donna shared after a request came in for a dog requiring medical attention.
Her colleague, Natalie Thompson, headed out with her, just as devoted to helping another life in need. What neither woman knew was that their mission was about to take an unexpected turn.
Spotting A Pup In Need
As Donna drove toward their destination, Natalie suddenly urged her to slow down.
“I just saw something small and brown on a side street,” Donna told Natalie. “It might be another dog that needs our help.”
Natalie confirmed the sighting, but they chose to complete their scheduled mission first before returning. Once the medical rescue was finished, they set out to find the mysterious pup.
A Blanket Full Of Emotions
When they returned, the puppy was nowhere to be seen.
“I was devastated at that moment,” Natalie later admitted. But she didn’t give up. Trusting her instincts, she scanned the alleyways until she spotted movement. There — a skinny, frightened dog darted into an abandoned multi-story building.
The structure was dark, unstable, and unsettling, but Natalie pressed forward. Climbing the shaky stairs, she reached the second floor, where the sight brought tears to her eyes.
Curled in a filthy old blanket, the little dog was desperately trying to stay warm in the freezing, crumbling space she had claimed as home.

Earning Trust Against All Odds
Natalie reached for her slip lead, only to realize she didn’t have it.
“I only had one slip lead with me, and it was on the dog in the Jeep,” Donna said.
Natalie rushed back, fearing the pup would vanish. When she returned, the blanket was empty. But outside, she spotted the dog sitting in an open field.

Crouching low, Natalie offered Vienna sausages. The pup accepted, and trust began to form.
Natalie named her “Dodie,” enchanted by her delicate, doll-like face. With gentle care, she slipped the leash around Dodie and guided her to the Jeep.
“In general, this is one of the hardest parts of any mission because some dogs are so scared. But Dodie was truly one of a kind,” Natalie shared.
A New Chapter Filled With Love
At the vet, Dodie bravely endured every test. Though underweight, her health was better than expected. She was placed on a special feeding plan with small meals throughout the day to help her regain strength.
Now safe in a foster home, Dodie spends her days wrapped not in a dirty blanket, but in warmth, comfort, and love.
Her foster mom Nicolina, along with dedicated volunteers, shower her with the care she has always deserved.
