California Foster Mom Thought Her Puppy Was Leaving Until The Paperwork Made Her Cry

Fostering is one of those quiet parts of rescue that changes everything. It gives crowded shelters room to breathe, and it gives animals a safe place to land while they wait for the family meant for them.

For the pets who enter foster care, that home can become their first real taste of comfort, stability, and hope. For the people who welcome them in, the experience often leaves a mark just as deep.

That is what makes saying goodbye so hard. After weeks or months of feeding, loving, and caring for a foster dog, letting them leave can feel like handing over a piece of your heart.

Danielle Ault understood that pain when she fostered a puppy named Fabian. She never expected him to become so deeply loved by her family, and when she learned he had been adopted, her heart broke.

But the tears that came next were not the kind she expected.

The Power Of Fostering

Fabian and his siblings had been found wandering alone in the wilderness near Covelo in Mendocino County, California.

The Humane Society for Inland Mendocino County quickly stepped in and rescued them, placing each puppy in a loving foster home.

Fabian found his temporary home with the Ault family, where he stayed for six weeks.

During this time, Danielle and her family grew attached to him, and they were devastated when the adoption news came in, especially Danielle.

What Danielle didn’t know was that someone very close to her had already stepped forward to adopt Fabian.

Throughout the time she spent fostering him, Danielle secretly hoped her mother would adopt him. But she didn’t want to pressure her, especially since her mother had recently lost a dog and wasn’t ready for another.

Still, Danielle would bring Fabian to the Humane Society’s open hours every weekend, quietly hoping that her mom would decide to adopt him.

When the shelter called to inform Danielle that Fabian had been adopted, her heart sank.

“We called Danielle into the office today, asking her to come help us review an application for Fabian that was a little different. We told her we needed her to help us make sure it was a good match,” the Humane Society shared on their Facebook page.

A Heartfelt Reunion

Although Danielle was heartbroken, she drove to the shelter to say her goodbyes to the dog she had grown so close to.

But when she arrived, she received some unexpected news: the person who adopted Fabian was her own mother.

Fabian wasn’t leaving the family after all.

“An adoption application came in this morning for Fabian and we jumped for joy! Our staff immediately called and soon found out this was a special case. It was Danielle’s mom, Vicki, calling from Idaho to make Fabian’s adoption dreams come true.”

Danielle was overcome with emotion when she saw her mother’s name on the adoption application. The foster team captured the heartfelt moment as Danielle broke down in tears.

A New Life For Fabian

Fabian, now renamed Stan, found his perfect forever home with Danielle’s mom, Vicki. Vicki lives on a large ranch in Idaho, making her the perfect fit for Fabian, who loves the outdoors.

“We are incredibly fortunate to watch him grow while being connected to him forever. He’s a ranch dog now, has his own special spot in the pickup, goes camping, shopping, and on all kinds of road trips. He is a good boy with a great heart, and he deserves the life he has,” Danielle said in an interview.

For Fabian, this journey ended in the most perfect way possible, and for his foster family, it was the ideal outcome—one that showed just how strong love and compassion can be.
