In a quiet stretch of rural New York, noise from Shelly Lisi’s dogs was nothing new.
Her home sat near farmland and a horse property, so animals passing through were a normal part of the day. Her two dogs noticed them all and made sure everyone else noticed, too.
Most of the time, their barking burned out quickly. Like many dog owners, Lisi had learned not to react to every outburst.
This time felt different.
The dogs would not settle, and the sound dragged on far longer than it usually did. Lisi started to feel that something was not right.
So she stepped outside, curious and uneasy, to see what had set them off.
What she discovered in her yard was something she never would have expected.
A Small Visitor Appears
Her dogs had been barking for nearly twenty minutes straight, which told Lisi they were determined to alert her to something important.
When she finally reached them, she saw her two dogs circling around a tiny figure in the grass: a small kitten who refused to move. Suddenly, the nonstop barking made perfect sense.
Although startled at first, Lisi quickly took control of the situation.
“I was a little alarmed, and the kitten was quite frightened but feisty,” Lisi told The Dodo. “As soon as I got out there, the dogs calmed down — they were more curious than anything. I was able to pick up the kitten and we got him into a crate in our garage so we could look him over.”
Once the kitten was safe, Lisi began searching for his family. She went door to door and checked outdoor security cameras in her neighborhood, but no one recognized him or knew where he had come from.
Even though this unexpected guest was not part of her plans, it quickly became clear that fate might have had something else in mind.
A New Chapter Begins
Lisi could not be certain of the kitten’s health, so she arranged for him to be checked. Other than being slightly underweight, he was healthy and alert.
At first, he was understandably nervous in his new surroundings. With patience and gentle care, his sweet and playful personality began to shine through.
Before long, the entire family had fallen in love with him. To everyone’s delight, he also bonded wonderfully with the dogs.
The harmony in the household made Lisi’s next decision simple. She chose to adopt him herself.
