Senior Dog Abandoned On New York Streets Gets A Second Chance With Someone Who Understands Fear

One thing about dogs that never stops getting me is how little they actually ask for. Give them a safe home, good food, someone to adore, and a little time to play, and honestly, they are ready to call life wonderful.

The heartbreaking part is that so many dogs never get even those simple things. Some are forced to figure life out on their own, some find themselves behind shelter walls, and others, like Hobbs, are left behind as if they never mattered.

Hobbs, a senior dog, was pushed out of the life he knew by his former owner and left to survive alone on the streets. Day after day, he struggled without help, until one rescuer finally noticed him and changed the direction of his life for good.

When the staff at Animal Care Centers of New York received word about Hobbs, they acted quickly. A rescuer rushed to pick him up, determined not to let the pup endure any more suffering on the streets.

Once he was safely secured, Hobbs was taken to the shelter, where his fragile condition became even more evident.

To provide him with the best possible care, Hobbs was transferred to Tails of Love Rescue, where he could receive more focused attention and hopefully find a forever family.

However, his chances weren’t looking good. As an older dog with multiple health problems, senior pups often face difficulties when it comes to adoption.

A Chance Encounter

But Hobbs’ luck changed one day when Catherine walked into the shelter and met him for the first time.

Although Hobbs was shy and cautious, Catherine felt an immediate bond with him. She knew he deserved the chance to heal and learn to trust again.

Catherine took Hobbs home, and quickly realized that the road ahead would require patience.

“Hobbs was just really scared,” Catherine explained to GeoBeats Animals. “We theorized that he was probably abused. He was pretty unsocialized, so I think maybe he just was with a family that didn’t really care for him or in a bad situation with too many other dogs mistreating him.”

Slow Progress, But Steady Growth

The journey wasn’t easy. Hobbs often barked and growled, keeping his guard up. Catherine respected his space but never stopped showing him kindness.

Gentle touches, calm words, and quiet moments helped Hobbs begin to trust that Catherine wasn’t a threat.

Once Hobbs relaxed enough to let her touch him without fear, everything changed. His walls started to break down, and their bond began to form.

Catherine noticed that Hobbs gravitated toward her more than anyone else. She wanted him to feel confident around other people and dogs as well, so she made it her mission to help him feel safe in every situation.

Walks became part of their daily routine, even though they weren’t always easy. Hobbs struggled with luxating patellas, arthritis, and weak knees.

Catherine adjusted her pace to suit his, resting when he needed breaks. When longer walks became too challenging, she found creative ways to make sure Hobbs could still enjoy outdoor time.

“He’s a pretty hobbling old guy. I usually take him in a stroller or carry him in a baby wrap,” Catherine shared.

When Catherine couldn’t be home, her cats often kept Hobbs company. He quickly adapted and fit right in.

Later, Catherine adopted another senior dog from the shelter who reminded her of Hobbs. Little Nacho Supreme joined their family and, to everyone’s delight, the two older dogs bonded quickly. They nap together, rest side by side, and enjoy a peaceful, loving life.

For Catherine, watching Hobbs thrive has been one of her greatest rewards. After years of hardship and neglect, Hobbs finally has a loving home, comfort, and companionship.

Catherine summed it up by saying, “Every day I see Hobbs’ face, and it just gives me so much happiness. To see how loved he is and how content, I am so happy that I adopted him and that he came into my life.”
