So many poor, lost, and abandoned souls…
So little time to save them all…
I don’t know what’s going on inside the minds of people who purposely abandon a dog.
But, I do know what’s going on inside the minds of dogs that are being left out on the streets, in the woods, all alone.
They’re petrified. They don’t know what to do or why they’re not in their beds. As time passes by, hope escapes their small bodies, making room for more fear and despair.
Will my hooman ever come back for me?
The only question that echoes in their mind keeps haunting them until something happens… someone kind comes to rescue them.
I know a Doodle that felt the same way… all alone and lost in the woods.
Parker, the brown and white Doodle boy, lost faith in humanity rather fast. It took him days to finally open up and allow himself to trust the human kind again.
This is the story of how Parker went from sleeping on pine needles to getting a warm and cuddly bed.
One Cozy Dog Bed, Please
Somewhere in the woods of South Carolina…
It’s pitch dark, and the only hooman you know plays your trust and ditches you and your friends. You don’t know the territory. You have no idea what even happened or what you did to earn such treatment.
The only thing you know is that you’re on your own now.
Parker, the Doodle, along with a bunch of his friends, were abandoned by their breeder. Breeding, raising, and selling proper Doodle dogs is a skill that not many people master. Some still debate the level of unethicality of breeding Doodles.
Guess Parker’s first owner had problems with making a profit out of him, and thus, he decided the best thing he could do was to simply leave him.
Desperate for a human touch, crying for a cuddly bed to rest his head, Parker found a place to spend the night. It was a natural bed, made of pine needles, and the only comfortable place Parker could find in the woods.
It didn’t take long for dog rescuers to find him.
But, getting him off that bed wasn’t that easy. It’s not because Parker loved the feeling of dry pine needles sticking into his coat.
It was because Parker lost a lot of things, including his faith in humanity.
Could This Be My Furever Home?
After a few days of avoiding the rescuers and trying to stay on his spiky bed, Parker finally lost the will to fight. The dog rescuers managed to catch him and bring him to Halfway There Rescue; a shelter from Charlotte covering pups in need from North and South Carolina.
They all were certain that Parker would get a foster home in a matter of days. He was a sweet, yet troubled boy that just needed some love, care, and understanding.
When the poor Doodle boy got to his forever home, he was terrified and too nervous to enjoy the comfort he got. Luckily, this transition was eased, thanks to Parker’s new canine siblings. He didn’t just get Carrie, his foster mom; Parker got a family!
“Gradually he’s warmed up to the other dogs,” foster mom Carrie said. “I have a rescue husky-pit mix, Malala, who is a saint and often helps crack scared dogs out of their shell. They now play nonstop in the backyard and around the house.”
Parker went from a scared boy into a pup that was learning how to enjoy life to the fullest.
“He’s a goofy, friendly, carefree dog when he’s outside with the other dogs,” Carrie said. “He plays chase and wrestles, and digs a lot in the dirt.”
Every rehab process, going from a traumatized dog to a happy-go-lucky pooch, is a long journey. It takes time and patience for such dogs to leave their troubles in the past and open their minds to something new.
Sure, it’s not hard to get used to something good, but it’s still not easy to overcome any issues that have marked you.
Happily Ever After
According to some information we got, Parker’s case was a complete success. A pup that used to sleep on pine needles got adopted. Parker finally has a loving home… something he always deserved.
Please be careful when buying designer dog breeds. Doodles, although they’re super sweet and terrific as pets, still have a lot of background issues. Parker came from a backyard breeder. Your Doodle might, too, if you don’t do your research.
I always promote the adopt, don’t shop policy. However, if you’re really interested in buying a Doodle, ask someone who’s into the dog business, preferably your local vet, to recommend you good breeders.
If we stop backyard breeding, at least in one area, we will be closer to improving Doodles as a rightful dog breed without many background problems.
