A soft toy can mean the world to a dog.
Plenty of pups carry stuffed animals around like tiny best friends, curling up beside them and holding them close whenever they need a little extra comfort. It is a sweet, familiar sight for anyone who has spent time around dogs.
In a shelter, that kind of comfort can matter even more.
Kennel life is loud and restless. Dogs hear barking all around them, watch people come and go, and often get very little true quiet. Living that way for a short time is hard enough, but spending years in that environment can wear on even the most loving heart.
Wally understood that better than most.
He had been waiting at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter in New York for more than 1,800 days, trying to keep himself steady through the noise, stress, and loneliness.
But the thing that brought him comfort was not a stuffed animal at all.
Wally chose something no one expected, and somehow, that one familiar object became the piece of shelter life he trusted most.
The Bowl That Brought Him Peace
What caught the attention of Wally’s caregivers was that instead of cuddling a plush toy, he carried his food bowl with him everywhere. It became his emotional anchor, something the staff had never seen before.
Over the course of five years, Wally became a favorite among the New York shelter team, who grew increasingly concerned for his well-being.

Since arriving at the shelter, he had been adopted twice, but both times, he was returned.
Still Hoping For A Family
Neither return was due to Wally’s behavior. He was always upbeat and affectionate, a dog full of love.
But each time he came back, he seemed a little more subdued, a little more anxious. The staff could see how deeply the lack of a permanent home was affecting him. He longed for what every dog dreams of, a family to call his own.
Despite the challenges, the shelter team continues to lift Wally’s spirits. Their dedication often brings out the best in him.
Wally is a playful and loving dog who enjoys running outside and interacting with staff and other dogs. He’s quick to swap his toys for treats and beams with happiness when he’s out of his kennel.
