When a scared stray dog began watching a Texas property from the trees, she was looking for a sign of safety. What she found changed her life—and led to even more neighborhood rescues.
Watching From the Shadows
It started with a silent observer at the edge of a Texas property.
A stray dog would stand out by the trees, just sitting quietly and watching the residents from afar.
She was incredibly hesitant to approach, but she was paying close attention to how the homeowner interacted with her own dog, a Great Pyrenees named Honey.
The stray was learning that Honey was safe, loved, and well cared for.
Taking the First Steps
Whenever the homeowner tried to call the dog over, she would immediately turn and run.
She always seemed to retreat toward the bottom of the property, leaving her would-be rescuer wondering what she was doing out there.
A few days later, the dog appeared again, but her fear was obvious.
Her tail was tucked firmly between her legs, showing just how scared she was of human contact.
Building a Bond
Determined to show the dog that she meant no harm, the woman decided to try a different approach.
She started tossing food out into the yard, hoping the hungry stray would take a chance.
To her relief, the dog actually came up and ate the food.
Slowly but surely, she began inching closer with each visit, building a fragile foundation of trust.
A Forever Decision
Then, one day, everything changed in an instant.
As the rescuer described it, “it literally just clicked” for the sweet dog.
She finally approached with a happy demeanor, acting as if she had lived on the property her entire life.
It was clear she had made up her mind, deciding, “OK, this is my forever home. This is where I’m staying.”
The Guardian Apprentice
Now named Hazel, the dog proudly wears a pretty new collar.
Despite being allowed inside, Hazel doesn’t like to stay indoors for very long.
She prefers to be outside with her new best friend, Honey, the Great Pyrenees guardian dog who refuses to come inside at night.
Hazel follows Honey’s every move, barking right behind her and acting as if she is a giant guardian dog, too.
A Smile That Melts Hearts
The two dogs have become the best of sisters, sharing a beautiful and playful bond.
Hazel is also incredibly affectionate with her rescuer, whining until she is allowed to give a flurry of grateful kisses.
Looking into her eyes reveals a sweet, almost human-like smile that completely melts the heart.
Her transformation from a terrified stray to a smiling, loving family member is nothing short of beautiful.
Another Mother in Need
Hazel wasn’t the only dog in the area who needed a helping hand.
The rescuer soon noticed another stray female hanging out on the street with a couple of male dogs.
It was obvious that this new dog was either already pregnant or headed that way.
Covered in flies and ticks, the expectant mother desperately needed medical care and a safe place to rest.
The Fear of the Leash
Catching the pregnant stray proved to be a significant challenge.
The second the rescuer had any kind of leash in her hand, the dog would immediately back up and refuse to approach.
Even tempting treats like Vienna sausages weren’t enough to overcome her deep-seated fear of being captured.
The rescuer knew she had to figure out where the dogs were staying to set up a proper, safe trap.
A Successful Rescue Mission
After tracking their movements, the rescuer set up a trap near some steps, giving the dogs time to get used to the smell.
The two male dogs were the first to safely enter the trap.
Tarot, the pregnant mother, wasn’t around that day, but just a couple of days later, she finally gave in to the safety of the trap as well.
The timing of her capture couldn’t have been more perfect.
Safe Havens and New Beginnings
Tarot was moved into a comfortable foster home just in time to have her puppies in a warm, safe environment.
Today, all of her puppies have found their loving homes, and Tarot is finally ready to just be somebody’s baby on the couch.
As for her two male companions, arriving at a safe yard was like a switch flipping in their minds.
They instantly became happy and playful, and now, they are fully ready to find their own forever families.
