Dogs often show us what it means to be strong. Their resilience in the face of hardship reminds us that even when life changes, love and joy can carry us through. They live fully in the moment, teaching lessons about courage that people often forget.
Maverick is one of those dogs. Once a shelter pup with an uncertain future, his life took a turn that would test his strength in ways no one expected. What might have broken another spirit revealed his courage instead.
His journey is not just about survival but about the power of love, hope, and second chances. What happened next is a story that continues to inspire.
A Strong Bond

When Carignan walked into a shelter in Greenville, South Carolina, he had no plans to adopt a dog. Yet when he saw Maverick, something shifted. The pup had been found in a cornfield by animal control and brought to the shelter.
Carignan felt an instant pull, a sense that this dog was meant to be his. Within hours, Maverick was no longer a stray but a cherished companion.

The two quickly settled into a rhythm filled with play and adventure. Maverick’s energy matched Carignan’s spirit, and their bond deepened with each passing year.
For nearly five years, their days were full of joy and companionship.

That peace was shaken the day Maverick refused to get up from the couch. At first, Carignan thought little of it, but moments later he heard a loud thump from the other room.
His then-girlfriend screamed that Maverick’s hind legs were no longer working. Carignan rushed in and saw his beloved dog dragging himself forward with only his front paws. Panic and heartbreak set in as he realized something was terribly wrong.
Facing A New Reality

Maverick was diagnosed with intervertebral disc disease, a severe spinal condition.
The news was crushing. He had gone from being full of life to struggling with pain, and Carignan could only watch.
“…When you’re a parent you just wanna take their pain away and put it in your body and you wanna suffer through it because you don’t wanna see them suffer through it,“ he told GeoBeats Animals.

Vets provided pain relief, but the long-term outlook was grim. Maverick’s condition ranked high in severity, and while therapy offered a small hope, walking on his back legs again was unlikely. Over time, he lost all feeling in them. The pain subsided, but their world had changed.
Determined to help, Carignan bought Maverick a set of wheels. At first, Maverick was terrified of them. With patience, he learned to use them, and soon they became his freedom. Now, whenever he realizes it is time to roll, his joy is unmistakable.

Carignan’s devotion never wavered.
“My bond with Maverick is for sure, it’s inseparable,” he added. “I feel like in some ether out there our brains are interconnected. In times when I was depressed or I’ve been down and out or I’ve been upset or have made bad decisions, Maverick has definitely helped me alleviate those by just being there with him.”
Lessons From a Brave Soul

Life in Greenville, South Carolina, looks different now, but Maverick’s spirit continues to shine. His wheels let him chase joy, his heart remains open, and his presence is a daily reminder of resilience.
“Maverick has taught me to just love, just stop and love, stop and give someone a hug, stop and tell someone what they mean to you genuinely. And I try to do that every single day,” Carignan reflected.
For Carignan, Maverick is more than a pet. He is a teacher, a partner, and proof that even in the face of hardship, love can still thrive.
