A Sweet, Big-Headed Missouri Pit Bull Was Stuck Inside An Abandoned House, Leading A Quick-Thinking Rescuer To Build A Makeshift Ramp To Freedom.
A Face In The Window
When Donna from Stray Rescue of St. Louis pulled up to an abandoned Missouri house, she was immediately met with a heartbreaking sight.
Poking out from the shadows of a broken basement window was the face of a gray pit bull.
The poor pup was trapped inside the desolate building, unable to climb out of the deep basement on his own.
He looked up at his unexpected visitor, likely wondering if help had finally arrived.
Earning His Trust
Donna approached the window gently, speaking in a soft, reassuring voice.
“Hey! What are you doing? You’re OK!” she called out to the nervous dog.
Knowing that food is often the quickest way to a stray dog’s heart, she began offering him treats through the window opening.
The hungry pup eagerly accepted the snacks, slowly building trust with the kind woman standing outside.
A Heavy Dilemma
While the dog was friendly and willing to be helped, there was a significant physical barrier to his rescue.
The window was too high up from the basement floor, and the dog was simply too heavy to be lifted straight out.
As Donna noted, he was just a “big boy,” making a traditional rescue hoist impossible.
The rescue team needed to figure out a safe way to get the heavy dog up to window level.
Scavenging For Supplies
Looking around the debris-filled basement, the team had to get creative with whatever materials were left behind.
They spotted an old mattress lying discarded in the dark room.
Nearby, they also found a heavy wooden door that had been taken off its hinges.
These discarded items were about to become the dog’s ticket to freedom.
Building A Makeshift Ramp
With a plan in mind, the rescuers got to work constructing a makeshift ramp.
They propped the old mattress up onto a table that was sitting beneath the window.
To give the soft mattress some much-needed stability for the heavy dog, they laid the wooden door right on top of it.
The structure created a perfect, angled walkway leading straight to the open window.
The Great Escape
With the ramp in place, it was time to coax the big boy upward.
Using a leash and gentle encouragement, they guided him onto the wooden door.
As soon as the dog put his front paws up on the makeshift ramp, the team knew they had a chance.
“Pull, pull, pull!” Donna encouraged, and the brave dog walked right up the ramp and out the basement window.
The Sweetest Gray Pittie
Once he was finally out in the fresh air, the dog’s true personality immediately shined through.
Far from being scared or defensive, he was incredibly grateful to his rescuers.
Donna described him as “just the nicest boy” with a lovable, big gray head.
He was safe at last, leaving the dark, abandoned basement behind for good.
The Ultimate Couch Potato
The sweet dog was given the adorable name Oscar Mayer by his rescuers.
It didn’t take long for this lovable, chunky boy to find the perfect forever family.
Today, Oscar Mayer is living his absolute best life in a comfortable, loving home.
After surviving in a cold basement, his rescuers happily report that he is now doing great as the ultimate, pampered “couch potato.”
