Heartbroken Deaf Georgia Puppy Kept Getting Returned To The Shelter By Families Who Couldn’t Handle His Needs
A deaf Georgia puppy who faced multiple rejections at the shelter finally finds a family who thinks his quirks are absolutely perfect.
A Heartbreaking Start
Chompers had a rough beginning in life in Georgia. It is believed the sweet pup originated from a puppy mill, where he was ultimately discarded simply because he was born deaf.
He ended up at the Atlanta Humane Society in Georgia, waiting for someone to look past his lack of hearing. Unfortunately, his journey to a forever home was filled with false starts.
People would adopt the adorable dog, only to bring him right back to the shelter. He had been returned once or twice by families who couldn’t handle his deafness, leaving him waiting for a true second chance.
An Instant Connection
When Geraldine and her boyfriend walked into the shelter, they weren’t expecting to find a dog who already seemed to know them. But the moment they locked eyes with Chompers, everything clicked.
“As soon as we saw him, he was just so excited to see us, like he knew us,” Geraldine recalled.
Despite his past rejections, the pup’s spirit was completely unbroken. His joyful, wiggly greeting won the couple over immediately.
They looked at the sweet dog and instantly knew they had found the one.
The Soul Pup Realization
Leaving the shelter behind, Chompers headed to his new apartment with the family who promised to never bring him back.
The transition into his new home was incredibly smooth. Within the very first day, a deep, unbreakable bond began to form.
“The first 24 hours, I was like, ‘This is my soul pup,'” Geraldine shared.
He was finally safe, and he seemed to understand that he was exactly where he belonged.

Caring for a deaf dog naturally came with a learning curve. Because Chompers can’t hear, he has no recall if he wanders off.
Geraldine admitted it was a bit scary at first, as they had to figure out how to navigate his silent world safely.
Visually, his deafness is a bit ironic. He sports a pair of massive, adorable ears that stand tall on his head.
“He has the giant ears that are just for show,” Geraldine joked. “They’re just an accessory because they don’t work.”
A City Dog’s Superpower
What some might see as a disability actually turned out to be Chompers’ greatest advantage for apartment living.
Living in a bustling, noisy city can be overwhelming for many dogs, but for Chompers, it’s completely peaceful. He doesn’t get startled by loud sirens or street noise.
Geraldine calls his deafness his “superpower.” He lives in his own happy little world, entirely unbothered by the chaos outside.
When other dogs bark at him, he just stares back in confusion, having no idea what the noise even means.
An Unexpected Discovery
For a long time, Chompers didn’t make a single sound. He never barked when he first arrived at his new home.
However, someone suggested they take him to a dog chiropractor for a routine check. During the visit, the chiropractor gently adjusted the dog’s neck.
To everyone’s absolute shock, that small adjustment changed everything. Chompers suddenly “found his bark.”
Now, he uses his newfound voice very selectively. He never barks at other dogs, saving his special vocalizations entirely to communicate with his mom when she leaves for work.
The Security Blanket
Beyond his giant ears and selective bark, Chompers has developed a few incredibly endearing habits. Chief among them is his absolute obsession with a special blanket.
It originally belonged to Geraldine, but the sweet pup quickly claimed it as his own. Now, he carries the soft fabric with him everywhere he goes in the apartment.
He loves to knead the blanket, happily “making biscuits” like a contented cat.
Whenever the family decides to hang out on their balcony, Chompers makes sure to grab his trusty blanket first before joining them outside.
The Best Medicine For Stress
As a PhD student, Geraldine carries a heavy load of daily stress. But the moment she walks through her front door, all of her worries melt away.
She gently wakes her sleeping dog, and his reaction is the highlight of her day. She immediately feels like all her problems are gone.
Chompers also tags along with her boyfriend for school drop-offs and pick-ups. When he spots Geraldine walking toward the car, his face lights up with pure shock and joy.
“No one gets so surprised to see me,” she said.
Never Leaving Her Side
At home, Chompers is a certified velcro dog. He refuses to let his favorite person out of his sight for even a moment.
If Geraldine tries to go to the bathroom alone, Chompers will literally barge through the door. He pops his head in as if to say, “Where are you going? Don’t go, mom.”
The way he looks at her speaks volumes. His sweet, expressive eyes radiate pure gratitude and love.
“No one’s ever looked at me with those little cutie eyes,” Geraldine shared. “I live for this dog now.”

Whoever dropped Chompers off at the shelter because they couldn’t sell a deaf puppy missed out on a truly remarkable companion.
He has brought endless joy, laughter, and comfort into his new family’s life. Geraldine and her boyfriend are overwhelmingly grateful for the chance to love him.
He has made their lives a hundred percent better, filling their apartment with happiness.
