Minnesota Foster Mom Opens Her Home To A Pregnant Rescue Dog, But One Look Reveals A Heartbreaking Truth
Smile survived living in piles of trash in a hoarding situation. When she finally made it to a foster home in Minnesota, her new family realized the trauma she had endured went deeper than anyone knew.
A Life In The Trash

Before she knew what it meant to have a loving family, a sweet Minnesota dog was simply trying to survive. She was living outside, surrounded by piles of trash in Tijuana, Mexico.
The conditions were bleak and chaotic. She was trapped in a hoarding home alongside 23 to 25 other dogs, fighting for basic necessities.
The experience had taken a significant toll on her body. She had mange, leaving much of her fur missing.
The Journey Across Borders

Thankfully, a compassionate rescuer spotted the dogs and stepped in to help. They began the arduous process of getting the animals out of the hoarding situation.
The rescuer partnered with the At-Choo Foundation in California, an organization dedicated to bringing vulnerable dogs into the United States for a second chance.
From there, her journey wasn’t over. Another rescue group, Mutt Mutt Engine, coordinated the transportation to bring her all the way up to Minnesota.
Expecting A Mother

In Minnesota, a foster mom named Stephanie was eagerly awaiting the new arrival. Stephanie’s children had been asking to foster a whelping mom again for quite some time.
The rescue had informed Stephanie that the incoming dog was pregnant. She was reportedly due to have her babies in just about two weeks.
The family prepared their home, ready to welcome a mother dog and help her safely deliver her puppies.
A Heartbreaking Discovery

When the dog finally arrived, Stephanie took one look at her and knew something was wrong. There was absolutely no way this dog was two weeks away from giving birth.
Instead of being heavily pregnant, she was incredibly skinny and malnourished. Stephanie soon learned a devastating fact about canine survival.
Dogs can actually protect themselves and their bodies in times of extreme stress by absorbing their pregnancies. The pregnancy had ended as her body responded to the extreme stress she had experienced.
Afraid To Blink

Despite everything she had been through, the dog smiled right away. However, it was clear to Stephanie that the dog was deeply nervous and lacked trust.
Her fear was palpable in her body language. Her eyes would tear up and water constantly.
It looked as though she was terrified to even blink. She seemed to brace herself, fearing that if Stephanie raised a hand or moved too quickly, something terrible would happen.
A Defensive Sweetness

The dog was incredibly sweet, but Stephanie quickly realized it was a trauma response. The sweetness was a desperate attempt to convince her new humans that she was a good girl.
She was trying to show them that she was worthy of love and deserved to feel safe. It broke Stephanie’s heart to see the dog working so hard just to feel safe.
Over time, that dynamic began to shift. Today, her sweetness is entirely different because she finally knows she doesn’t have to convince anyone of her worth.
Learning To Be A Dog

As she settled in, it became obvious that her people meant everything to her. In fact, she loved her humans so much that she would ignore food if it meant she could stay right by their side.
Until very recently, she wouldn’t even bother with toys. She simply wanted to be as close to Stephanie and her family as possible.
Stephanie began making sure she ate by sitting with her and offering praise. They actively show her how proud they are when she eats a meal or finally decides to play with a toy.
The Girl With The Big Brown Eyes

Through basic care and unconditional love, the dog has begun to truly thrive. Her personality shines through her beautiful, massive brown eyes that seem to constantly sparkle.
Whenever she flashes her signature smile, those big eyes squint and get smaller and smaller. It was this beautiful expression that finally earned her a name.
The woman who runs the At-Choo Foundation officially named her Smile. Before her rescue, this precious dog didn’t even have a name to call her own.
The Hardest Goodbye

Stephanie admits that she loves Smile with every fiber of her being. She feels a deep, profound connection to the dog who survived so much.
Despite this bond, Stephanie knows her ultimate job is to find Smile her perfect forever family. It is a bittersweet reality of being a dedicated foster parent.
Smile will undoubtedly be the hardest foster Stephanie has ever had to say goodbye to. But as Stephanie beautifully explains, if she keeps Smile, she won’t have the space to save the next dog who desperately needs a second chance.
