When a puppy is born with special needs, their start in life can be incredibly daunting. For one little dog named Nellie, being different meant losing her very first home before she even had a chance to settle in.

Nellie was dumped by a breeder simply because of a genetic condition that left her both deaf and blind.

Without sight or hearing to guide her, the tiny puppy found herself in desperate need of a safe landing spot.

Fortunately, her plea for help reached Secondhand Hounds, a Minnesota-based foster rescue organization that ensures every dog is placed into a loving home environment.

Instant Love And Acceptance

That safe landing spot came in the form of Sheridan and Eric, a compassionate couple who decided to open their doors to the special needs pup.

She was the very first deaf and blind puppy the couple had ever taken in, but any worries quickly melted away.

Sheridan immediately fell head over heels for the little dog. Eric noticed her instant attachment, noting that there was no back and forth about taking Nellie in—they just accepted it.

Within their care, the puppy finally had the chance to decompress and learn what a real family felt like.

Bringing a special needs dog into a new environment can be tricky, but Nellie proved to be incredibly resilient.

When she first arrived, she was greeted by the resident dogs who naturally wanted to sniff and investigate the newcomer.

Despite not being able to see or hear them, Nellie wasn’t scared at all.

Her foster parents had been a little nervous that she might take longer to adjust than a typical puppy, but she acclimated extremely well to her new surroundings.

It didn’t take long for Nellie to show her foster family just how capable she really was.

She navigates everything so beautifully that a stranger would never even guess she is deaf and blind.

Her foster parents credit her incredible sense of smell for much of her confidence.

She gets around almost exactly like a normal dog, having quickly memorized every single inch of the house.

Keeping Things Familiar

To help Nellie maintain her newfound confidence, Sheridan and Eric follow one simple but crucial rule in their home.

They do not move any furniture around, keeping things in place as much as possible.

Because of this consistency, Nellie can chase the other dogs full speed through the house, out the door, and down the deck.

Watching her joyful, uninhibited zoomies is nothing short of amazing for her foster parents.

The Sweetest Greetings

Because Nellie can’t rely on sight or sound to connect with her family, she has developed her own unique ways of showing affection.

She loves to be physically touching her humans or the other dogs, finding deep comfort in just being close to someone all the time.

When she greets someone for the first time, she has a very specific and endearing routine.

She will put her mouth right up to a person’s face, staying perfectly still to feel their presence, before finally giving them a gentle kiss.

Digging Up Buried Treasures

As Nellie settled into her daily routine, her playful and mischievous personality began to shine through.

The vet had explained that because Nellie has never known any different, she truly believes she is just like any other dog.

This means she absolutely loves doing normal dog activities, like digging in the yard.

The couple recently learned that the previous homeowners’ dogs had buried items in the yard, and Nellie and her furry siblings have made it their mission to dig up every single hidden treasure.

One of the family’s favorite things about Nellie is how she thinks she is being incredibly sneaky, totally unaware of how visible her antics are.

But beyond her silly quirks, there is a deep, physical sign that she belongs right where she is.

Nellie has the cutest little marking on her nose, which perfectly matches a beauty mark right under Sheridan’s nose.

While Eric might think it’s just a coincidence, Sheridan feels it’s a sign they are meant to be together, admitting she’s ready to push past the point of just fostering this extraordinary little survivor.
