In Pennsylvania, after being used for backyard breeding and abandoned in a blizzard, a protective Husky finds a loving home and a surprising new purpose.

In Pennsylvania, Belle was a broken Husky who had endured a difficult life. Used for backyard breeding, she knew more about loss than love, and her spirit had been heavily worn down.

But despite her traumatic past, she held onto a fierce instinct to protect those who needed her most.

During the first blizzard of December that year, animal control officers spotted a heartbreaking sight. Belle was wandering the freezing streets, but she wasn’t alone.

She was curled up on top of a blind Chihuahua, using her own body to shield the tiny dog from the harsh winter elements.

The little blind Chihuahua, named Winston, relied entirely on his larger companion to navigate the world. Belle had even been wearing a cowbell around her collar so she could act as his guide dog.

The two dogs had managed to escape their previous living situation together. It wasn’t Belle’s first time ending up at the shelter.

She had been in animal control at least two other times before. However, this time, the people who had been breeding her finally decided not to claim her.

A Patient Approach

Stephanie had just started fostering with an organization called No Dog Left Behind. When she heard about the bonded pair, she immediately drove to animal control to pick them up.

Bringing Belle into a home environment was incredibly challenging at first. The trauma of her past left her terrified of human touch.

When people would get close to her, she would snarl, growl, and back away in fear. Recognizing her distress, Stephanie knew they had to take things slowly.

Earning Her Trust

To keep everyone safe and give Belle space, Stephanie and her husband did not allow their children around the Husky at first.

Instead, they waited until the kids went to bed. The couple would stay up late, simply sitting in the same room with Belle.

They allowed the anxious dog to choose whether she was going to come up to them. Slowly but surely, their quiet patience won her over, and they were finally able to introduce her to their children.

A Forever Home Together

As Belle’s true, gentle personality began to shine through, Stephanie’s family realized they could never let her go.

They made the joyful decision to officially adopt her. “She’s ours now,” Stephanie shared with a smile.

Best of all, Winston the blind Chihuahua stayed with the family, too. The two best friends were able to continue living together in a safe, loving home.

The Unexpected Fosters

Belle’s life took another beautiful turn when Stephanie’s family began fostering bunnies. They weren’t sure how the Husky would react to the small animals.

To their absolute amazement, Belle immediately took to a bunny named Daffodil. Her reaction left Stephanie and her husband stunned.

“This isn’t a behavior we’ve ever seen before,” Stephanie noted. Belle had decided that any small animal in the house was her own child.

A Fierce Protector

There were no words to describe how deeply Belle cared for the small animals. She began herding them gently, never nipping, but always making sure they stayed away from dangerous things.

Just like a mother with her babies, Belle became highly protective of her tiny friends. She would literally crawl into the bunny hutch just to snuggle with them.

If Stephanie tried to touch the bunny, Belle would promptly tell her off. “I know nobody is going to touch your bunny,” Stephanie would laughingly reassure her.

Supervising the Sanctuary

Belle’s protective instincts extended to the entire household. She took her self-appointed job as the sanctuary supervisor very seriously.

She would walk with Stephanie from area to area, making sure all of the creatures were getting everything they needed.

If Belle decided Stephanie had done a chore wrong, she would sit back and howl at her, demanding the highest standard of care for her tiny friends.

Stephanie believes Belle’s incredible behavior stems from her tragic past. Because she was used for breeding and separated from her puppies, her strong mothering instinct remained with her.

Today, the majestic white-and-gray Husky with chocolate brown eyes is finally living the life she deserves.

She chose to accept humans and other dogs again, and found her own unique way to be a mother. “I wish I could tell her that we know, we recognize everything that she’s done, and we love her for it,” Stephanie said.
