A Routine Shelter Walk-Through
For animal rescuers in California, walking through a crowded shelter can be an overwhelming experience.
There are always so many animals in need, and it can be difficult to decide who gets to leave.
One rescuer was doing her regular shelter walk-through, checking out all the dogs.
She was specifically looking to see if anybody was temperamentally stable enough to come with her rescue.
The Best Little Gentleman
As she approached one particular kennel, she wasn’t quite sure what to expect.
Inside stood a dog who was in rough shape, completely covered in dirt.
Despite his poor condition, he was standing there quietly.
The rescuer later described him as “the best little gentleman, who’s just trying his best to come home with me.”
A Winning Smile
At first, the rescuer couldn’t quite tell what the dog was doing as she approached the bars.
She gently asked him, “Do I wanna pet you?”
Suddenly, the dog’s expression changed, and he flashed her a wide, unmistakable smile.
That single, sweet moment made the decision incredibly easy.
Leaving The Shelter Behind
Seeing that joyful expression on the dog’s face sealed his fate.
“Oh, you’re smiling!” the rescuer exclaimed.
Without hesitation, she told the sweet pup, “You’re coming home with me.”
He had successfully charmed his way right out of the shelter system.
Washing Away The Past
Once he was safe with the rescue, the hard work of getting him healthy began.
The team immediately gave the dog, now named Mort, a much-needed bath.
They cleaned him up and finally got him looking a little bit better.
While he was no longer covered in dirt, his skin issues were still very apparent.
The Fur Gamble
Mort was still half bald, requiring special care to stimulate his hair growth.
His rescuers patiently applied treatments, letting the medicine do its work over time.
As his caretaker noted, it is always a gamble when you take in a half-bald dog.
You never quite know what they are going to look like when all that fur finally grows back.
A Beach Day And First Leash Walk
As Mort healed, it was time for him to experience the fun parts of being a beloved pet.
His caretakers fitted him with a brand new harness to see if it fit.
Then, they took him on a very special outing: his first-ever trip to the beach.
It was also Mort’s first time walking on a leash, and he did incredibly well.
Showing Off Downtown
Mort’s confidence blossomed as he explored the world outside the shelter.
His caretakers took him for walks downtown so he could proudly show off his recovering coat.
“You are looking so fluffy,” his rescuer praised as he trotted along.
His priceless personality was finally getting the chance to shine.
Ready For A New Chapter
It has been an exciting journey for the rescue team to witness Mort’s incredible transformation.
He has grown so much, both physically and emotionally, since that first day in the shelter.
Recently, Mort was neutered, which was the final step needed to clear him for his forever home.
Today, the sweet boy who won a rescuer’s heart with a smile is truly one of the best dogs they have available for adoption.
