Quiet Illnois Shelter Dog Had Barely Barked Once, Until Life Started Looking Very Different

After being found in the freezing cold on the South Side of Chicago, a gentle shelter dog gets a second chance to learn how to be a puppy again.

Walking through a crowded animal shelter in Illinois can be an overwhelming experience. With so many hopeful faces looking back through the kennel bars, it is hard to know which one to choose.

One rescuer was walking past a staggering 250 dogs when a particular pup caught her eye. Unlike the loud, jumping dogs begging for attention, this sweet boy was quiet and defeated.

He barely even picked his head up to look as people passed by. But when he did, he would just sit there and offer a gentle smile.

Surviving the Bitter Cold

The dog’s history was heartbreaking. He had been found in January on the South Side of Chicago, left outside in the freezing cold.

Despite his worn-down appearance, he wasn’t actually an old dog. His tired demeanor was simply the result of surviving in incredibly poor living conditions.

Yet, through all the hardship, his sweet spirit remained intact. For him to be such a loving dog after everything he had endured was nothing short of a miracle.

A Marshmallow Going Home

The rescuer knew she couldn’t leave him behind in that kennel. Touched by his gentle nature, she decided right then and there that she wanted to foster him.

She fondly described him as a “marshmallow” because of his adorable, squishy rolls. It was finally time for the big fella to leave the shelter behind.

“Let’s go home, Big Fella,” she told him, ready to show him what a comfortable life looked like. It was proof that good dogs are often waiting in places you wouldn’t normally look.

Once he was safely in his foster home, his new caretaker noticed something important. Because of his traumatic past in the winter weather, he was incredibly sensitive to the cold.

To help him enjoy his outdoor walks, she got him a special set of winter booties. The new footwear made a massive difference in his confidence.

With his paws protected from the freezing ground, he started trotting happily. “The booties are giving us speed!” his foster mom cheered as they walked.

Inside the house, it became clear that whatever happened in his past had left a deep impact on him. He was experiencing many basic comforts for the very first time.

He was given his first stuffed toy and his very first soft doggy bed. His foster mom felt like he didn’t even know how to be a normal dog yet.

He was so quiet that he only barked a single time while in her care. He needed time, patience, and love to slowly come out of his shell.

The Perfect Match

As he continued to heal, his foster mom started thinking about his future. She knew exactly what he needed to thrive in a permanent home.

She wanted him to be adopted by a family that already had another dog. She believed a furry sibling would be the perfect guide to help him “learn how to dog.”

Thankfully, the perfect family stepped forward. They were ready to give him the forever home he had been waiting for all his life.

The sweet boy’s adoption day finally arrived, and his new life exceeded all expectations. He was welcomed into a loving home with an older dog sister named Lola.

Having Lola by his side gave him the confidence he needed. It was in this new home, with his new sister, that he finally fully came out of his shell.

He was no longer the shut-down dog shivering in the Chicago cold. He was a beloved family member with a bright future.

Living His Best Life

For his foster mom, watching his transformation was incredibly rewarding. Seeing a dog go from their absolute worst moment to living their best life is a powerful experience.

“I got to experience a lot of that growth,” she shared, reflecting on their journey together. “I mean, this is the best thing ever, which is what makes fostering so amazing.”

Today, this gentle giant is safe, warm, and endlessly loved. When asked if he’s a happy boy now, his joyful smile says it all.
