A passerby in Pembroke Pines, Florida, could have kept walking after spotting the dog near a school.
Instead, they stopped.
The dog was in terrible condition, and it was obvious she needed help right away. She was twelve years old, though no one knew her then by the name she would later receive: Clara.
Her body told a heartbreaking story.
Clara was painfully thin, dehydrated, and covered in fleas and worms. Her eyes were swollen, and she could not see at all. On top of that, an injury made it difficult and painful for her to move.
There was no safe way to leave her there.
The passerby called the Pembroke Pines Police Department, and officers quickly arrived. They checked Clara for a microchip, hoping it might explain where she had come from.
What they found opened the door to an even more painful part of her past.
Microchip Leads Police To An Unexpected Response
The microchip revealed Clara belonged to a family in Fort Lauderdale. Police reached out, expecting relief and gratitude. Instead, they were met with indifference.
The owner claimed Clara had been missing since May and expressed no interest in reclaiming her. The officers were taken aback. Clara’s condition suggested she had been abandoned and mistreated.
Authorities launched an investigation into her former owners to determine what had happened.
Because Clara needed urgent care, the officers contacted Angela Goodwin, founder of the rescue group Pooches in Pines.
Goodwin was devastated by Clara’s condition and immediately began searching for a safe place where she could recover.
Rescue Shelter Steps In To Save Clara’s Life
Angela Goodwin reached out to Abandoned Pet Rescue, a Fort Lauderdale shelter known for saving animals without euthanasia.
Kara Starzyk, the shelter manager, thanked the Good Samaritan who had found Clara. She noted that Clara wouldn’t have lasted much longer on the streets, especially given her blindness and vulnerability.
Veterinarians examined Clara and discovered she had a uterine infection that required emergency surgery. Her anemia made the procedure dangerous, but the team worked around the clock to stabilize her.
Clara’s will to survive was evident. She fought through the pain and began her recovery.
Everyone breathed easier once the surgery was over and Clara was placed in a foster home where she could rest and heal.
Clara Begins To Heal In Foster Care
In the days following her surgery, Clara’s condition began to improve. Veterinarians prescribed antibiotics, supplements, and eye drops to support her recovery.
Her strength returned gradually, and she began walking again.
Despite everything she had endured, Clara remained affectionate and eager for connection.
“She now barks for attention and food and she loves to rub her face in your hands and snuggle in warm blankets,” Abandoned Pet Rescue wrote on Facebook.
Clara still requires daily eye drops and regular medical checkups, but her caregivers believe she has many joyful years ahead.
They hope she will soon be adopted into a peaceful home with people who will care for her and show her the love she’s always deserved.
