Losing a dog leaves a kind of emptiness that is hard to explain.
When the companion you love suddenly disappears, the quiet that follows can feel enormous. Every room feels different. Every day carries the same painful question, and every bit of hope becomes harder to hold onto.
Shamantha Powers from Indiana knew that pain because of Loki.
When her dog went missing, everything changed in a single moment. She searched for him with everything she had, following any possibility that seemed like it might lead somewhere.
But every hopeful clue ended the same way.
After nearly two years without answers, Powers reached a place where believing Loki would come home felt almost impossible.
Then her phone rang, and the story she thought she had lost suddenly changed.
An Endless Search With No Answers
The day Powers accepted that Loki might never come home was one of the hardest of her life. From the moment he went missing, she searched tirelessly, posting on every platform she could think of, hoping for even the smallest clue.
“As soon as I got home I searched high and low, posted on all social media platforms.. PetSmart, lost animals, Pet finder, Craigslist, all the things I could possibly think of, all with no luck!” Powers shared on Facebook.
Days turned into weeks, then months, and the chances of finding Loki seemed to shrink with every passing day. Eventually, Powers stopped believing that she would ever see him again.
Then, out of nowhere, everything changed with one unexpected call.
The Miracle Phone Call
Staff members at Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control in Indiana contacted Powers with news she never expected to hear.
Loki had been found. He had escaped from the person who had been caring for him while he was away. Once he was brought into the shelter, he was scanned for a microchip.
The familiar beep confirmed his identity and led the staff directly to his original family.
“We were able to contact his owner and that is when we found out she had been missing him for almost 2 years and could not contain her excitement that we had her baby,” FWACC wrote in a Facebook post.
For Powers, the news was nothing short of surreal. After so much time without him, she was finally going to be reunited with her dog.
“After searching endlessly for him I kinda lost hope. Until I got the phone call yesterday that they found my boy. I can’t begin to explain the overflow of emotions I am going through,” Powers shared in another post.
A Reunion Filled With Joy
When Powers arrived at the shelter, staff brought Loki out on a leash, waiting to see if he would recognize her. It took only seconds.
With a burst of excitement, Loki jumped and wiggled, his happiness overflowing. He knew immediately: his mom was there.
The room was filled with joy as Loki and Powers embraced, making up for every day they had been apart. After nearly two years, they were back together, and nothing was going to separate them again.
A New Beginning Together
After leaving the shelter, Powers and Loki returned home to start a new chapter in their lives. It took Loki a few days to adjust to his old surroundings, but once he did, his happiness was unmistakable.
Now, reunited, Powers and Loki are ready to face whatever comes next, side by side, stronger than ever.
