A puppy’s first weeks should be filled with warmth, closeness, and the steady comfort of a mother who keeps the world feeling safe.
Moonshine never had that kind of beginning.
The tiny pup was born with a physical condition that left her unable to walk, and the mother she needed most rejected her. At only four weeks old, she was already facing more than any newborn should.
That was when she was brought to Bosley’s Place Inc., a rescue nursery in Smyrna, Georgia, known for caring for orphaned puppies.
From the moment she arrived, the team focused on helping this fragile little survivor grow stronger and learn what happiness could feel like.
Finding Shelter And Support

Veterinarians diagnosed Moonshine with swimmer syndrome, a rare disorder affecting newborns. Her front legs were spread outward unnaturally, and her flattened rib cage made breathing difficult.
Recognizing the need for specialized care, the rescue contacted Beth, a foster with experience helping puppies with similar conditions. Moonshine was soon welcomed into Beth’s home near Atlanta, where love and comfort awaited her.

Beth’s own dogs greeted Moonshine with gentle affection, as if they sensed her vulnerability. For the first time, the little pup felt safe and accepted.
A Treatment Plan Built On Love And Patience

Beth carefully evaluated Moonshine’s condition and created a plan to support her recovery. Since her back legs were functioning well, the focus shifted to correcting her front limbs and helping her chest expand to ease pressure on her lungs.
“… So for now we’re going to focus on her two front legs and more prevention to help alleviate and heal her flat rib cage to provide some relief for her lungs,” Bosley’s Place Inc. shared on Facebook.
To encourage proper posture, Beth gently taped Moonshine’s front legs to prevent her from lying flat. The puppy didn’t resist, she was too busy soaking up affection from her new family.

Beth’s daughters quickly fell in love with Moonshine. They spent hours cuddling her, offering encouragement, and celebrating each small victory. Surrounded by care, Moonshine embraced her treatment with courage.
Progress That Melted Hearts

Before long, Moonshine began showing remarkable improvement. Her tail wagged with excitement, her steps grew steadier, and she even started running and playing with her foster siblings.
Her rescuers were thrilled.
“Moonshine is UNSTOPPABLE! Even her chest is rounding out slightly we are so unbelievably proud of this little fluffy nugget of love,” the rescue wrote in a Facebook post.
Her eyes sparkled with joy, and her sweet nature blossomed more each day. She had transformed completely.
Beth and her family couldn’t imagine life without her. Moonshine had become an irreplaceable part of their world.

On their daughter Jane’s birthday, Beth and her husband revealed a surprise that would change everything. They announced that Moonshine was officially staying.
The family adopted her, and Jane and her sister were overjoyed to learn their beloved foster pup was now theirs forever.
Renamed Sage, the once-rejected puppy now lives a life filled with love and security. She is cherished every day by the family who saw her worth and gave her the chance to thrive.
Her journey is a powerful reminder that love and compassion can turn even the saddest beginnings into something beautiful.
