Gaining a dog’s trust isn’t an easy job. And gaining the trust of a dog let down once before is, at times. a mission impossible!
That’s why I admire people who dedicate days, months, sometimes even years, to rebuilding a human-dog relationship. They don’t quit. They don’t opt for euthanasia. They simply give their all to succeed. And they often do!
Recently, a group of Chihuahuas saved from a terrible hoarding situation that arrived at the Texas shelter exemplified this best. All of them managed to recover and decompress, but one sweet Chi, in particular, took things to a whole new level.
Celeste, once a scared dog, warmed hearts when she decided to put all of her trust into one hooman — through a hug!
Volunteer’s Gentle Embrace Was All She Needed
When Celeste, her brother, and thirty-five other Chihuahuas arrived at the Humane Society of North Texas, they were absolutely terrified. Living in deplorable conditions had taken a toll on these pups, and naturally made them distrustful.
However, their caregivers knew just the cure: love!
“Despite being staff favorites they don’t always warm up to new people immediately but someone willing to put in a couple visits and follow our bonding protocols will be rewarded with a loyal, humorous and pocket sized companion for life,” wrote Kelly in the post.
In Kelly’s video, Celeste, one of the Chihuahuas, is shown coming out of her shell in the sweetest way possible. After almost three weeks of cowering in her kennel, Celeste finally decided to trust people. The result was heartwarming!
Upon being returned to her kennel, Celeste immediately leaped into a volunteer’s lap, requesting hugs.
“She came from a hoarding case, so she needs a patient and loving person to help her adjust. It took her nearly 3 weeks to climb into my lap like this, but once she trusts you she’s incredible,” shared the volunteer in the comments of the video.
She curled up in the volunteer’s arms and refused to let go, showing how desperate she was for love all along.
Fortunately, now she had plenty, as everyone at the shelter showered her with hugs and cuddles.
Life Completely Turned Around
Unlike many dogs who need more time to decompress and learn to trust, Celeste’s path toward recovery was better than expected.
In just a short amount of time, this pup with the sweetest underbite has already made many friends at the shelter, including her beloved caregivers.
It didn’t take Celeste long to capture the attention of her future owners. She was successfully adopted into a loving family, and was now ready to take on new adventures.
“We did it! Celeste was adopted this week. I have received a few updates and it looks like she is settling into her home quite well,” shared Kelly in a TikTok update.
While most dogs saved along with Celeste have been adopted, her brother, Neptune, is still waiting for a chance. Hopefully, his adopters are just around the corner, too!
