Dogs being left behind to survive on their own has become a painfully familiar sight. For anyone who genuinely loves animals, coming face to face with that kind of suffering is the sort of thing that stays with you.
That was exactly what Stephanie Castillo experienced when she came across something that made her heart drop.
Just outside a rescue center in Chino Hills, California, she spotted a cramped cage holding seven neglected dogs.
Their distress was impossible to miss, and Stephanie knew right away that she had to act without wasting a moment.
A Shocking Discovery Outside A Rescue Center

With little experience in emergency rescue situations, Stephanie wasn’t sure what to do next. She had no idea where the dogs had come from or who had left them there.
Since they were outside Priceless Pet Rescue, her first instinct was to seek help from the organization. Unfortunately, the shelter was closed that day. Still, Stephanie couldn’t walk away, not after seeing the condition they were in.
“It seemed like [they’d been] there for a while because they were sitting in their own filth and panting … I also noticed there was a blind senior dog that was in really bad shape,” Stephanie told The Dodo.

Determined not to give up, Stephanie contacted her local humane society for help. She thought she had found a solution, until they told her it would be several hours before anyone could arrive.
Given the dogs’ poor condition, waiting wasn’t an option. And leaving them behind was unthinkable. So, she made a bold decision and brought all seven dogs home with her.
Freedom And A Chance To Heal

Once back at her house, Stephanie was relieved to finally release the dogs from the cramped cage. But seeing them up close was even more heartbreaking.
“They … looked like they had been through a lot,” Stephanie said.
After giving them food and taking them on a short walk, the pups began to show signs of life again. Soon after, staff from the humane society arrived and transferred the dogs to Priceless Pet Rescue in Costa Mesa, California.
Though their journey to recovery was just beginning, Stephanie was overjoyed knowing they were now safe and had a real chance at a better future.
The rescue named the dogs Hal, Reese, Dewey, Francis, Malcolm, Lois, and Rudy. Their stories were shared on social media in hopes of finding them loving homes.
Four of the dogs were adopted quickly. Three are still waiting for their forever families, but their time is surely near.
After everything they’ve endured, these pups deserve nothing less than a life filled with love and comfort.
