How do you explain to a dog that he has to be apart from the person he loves most?
That was the heartbreaking reality one woman had to face when she brought her senior dog, Jackson, to a shelter.
The reason was painfully simple.
She was about to begin cancer treatment and would be hospitalized. Even knowing why it had to happen did not make it any easier to leave Jackson behind.
What hurt most was the thought of him ending up in an overcrowded shelter after spending so long by her side. She could not stop worrying about whether he would even be safe there.

The day finally came when Jackson’s mom was discharged from the hospital. She rushed to Emily’s home to reunite with her best friend.
When Jackson saw her, he ran straight to her, his tail wagging uncontrollably, and showered her with kisses.
With joy written all over his face, Jackson leaped and bounced, thrilled to be back with the person he loved most.
Emily and her family watched the reunion in tears, moved by the pure joy of the moment.
