Washington Dog Who Had Never Played With Other Dogs Meets A Puppy Who Refuses To Leave Him Alone
A mostly blind and fully deaf Washington dog who had never been socialized learns how to love and play after his mom brings home a relentless, happy special-needs puppy.
Hiding In The Shadows

Washington dog Little Buddy navigates the world a little differently than most dogs. He is fully deaf and mostly blind, having had one of his eyes removed.
Because of his past, he was never properly socialized. The world was a scary, quiet place for a dog who didn’t understand how to interact with it.
When his future mom first went to meet him at the rescue, Little Buddy was terrified. He didn’t even want to come out of his enclosure.
Before she took him home, the lady at the rescue made her promise one thing. “Promise me you won’t feel sorry for him,” she said, noting that he didn’t know he was any different.
Finding His Stride

At first, Little Buddy was hesitant about everything in his new environment. Without his sight and hearing to guide him, he had to rely on his other senses.
Slowly but surely, he began to realize that he was safe. He discovered a deep love for being outdoors, where he could stop and smell every fascinating scent.
He even turned out to be a wonderful hiking companion. Sometimes, he would trot ahead and look back at his mom, as if to say, “Come on, pick up the pace.”
His confidence was growing with every outdoor adventure. But there was still one hurdle he hadn’t crossed: interacting with other dogs.
Time For A New Chapter

Little Buddy had become incredibly attached to his mom. While they shared a beautiful bond, she knew he didn’t really know how to play with his own kind.
Earlier this year, she decided it was time to look for a second dog. She hoped a sibling might help bring out another side of his personality.
That’s when she found Aster. Like Little Buddy, Aster was a special-needs dog who required a unique kind of care.
When it was time to bring the new puppy home, her mom was nervous. She didn’t quite know how Little Buddy would feel about sharing his safe space.
An Unimpressed Big Brother

Aster is completely blind and deaf, but you would never know it from her spirit. She is, as her mom describes, “just the happiest little dog.”
Unfortunately, Little Buddy was not immediately charmed by her joyful energy. When they first met, he simply sniffed her and ran off.
Aster eagerly tried to initiate playtime with her new big brother. Little Buddy just stood there in confusion, wondering why this tiny creature was chasing him.
He had never learned the universal language of dog play. To him, Aster was just a chaotic new roommate interrupting his peaceful routine.
Refusing To Give Up

Despite the cold shoulder, Aster refused to give up on him. She was determined to win him over, no matter how many times he walked away.
The little puppy started getting very attached to her older brother. She followed his scent and shadowed his every move around the house.
Little Buddy wasn’t quite sure how to handle the relentless affection. There were times his mom swore she could hear him saying, “Mom, save me.”
It quickly turned into a classic older sibling, younger sibling dynamic. Aster was the annoying little sister, and Little Buddy was the exasperated older brother.
The Breakthrough Playtime

For a while, it seemed like they might just peacefully coexist without ever truly bonding. Then, the unexpected happened.
One day, Little Buddy finally gave in to Aster’s antics. For the very first time, he actually tried to play back with her.
Witnessing that milestone was an incredibly emotional experience for their mom. “I don’t know if I’d ever been so happy in my whole life,” she recalled.
All the patience and gentle encouragement had finally paid off. Little Buddy was learning how to be a dog, right in his own living room.
Leading By Example

Once the ice was broken, Little Buddy took on a new role. He became a mentor, teaching Aster how to be a good, well-behaved dog.
Because they both navigate the world without sight or hearing, they communicate in their own special way. Aster pays close attention to what her big brother does.
She is able to sense his movements and follow his lead. When she realizes that Little Buddy is sitting down, she understands that she needs to sit down and be calm, too.
He provides the steady, grounding presence that the energetic puppy needs. Together, they have found a perfect balance.
A Beautiful Transformation

Today, their relationship is completely transformed. Aster can easily convince Little Buddy to play, and he happily chases her around the house.
The dog who once hid in the corner of a rescue is now a confident, playful big brother. He even grooms Aster, gently giving her a bath with his licks.
For a dog who was never socialized, showing this level of affection is a huge accomplishment. He has overcome every obstacle his past left behind.
Little Buddy doesn’t just tolerate his little sister anymore. He really does love her, and she has made his quiet world brighter than ever.
