It is heartbreaking to think about how many dogs are never given enough time to show who they really are before their chance is taken away.
Mulan, a sweet Pittie girl, almost lost everything simply because she was trying to protect herself. Fear and painful experiences had shaped the way she responded, and before long, she was labeled “aggressive” and placed on the list to be put to sleep.
Shelter staff described her as “severely reactive.” She barked whenever someone came close and would not allow anyone near her kennel. In their eyes, there was no hope left for her.
But just as Mulan seemed to be running out of time, one determined rescuer appeared and refused to let her be given up on.
A Dog Misunderstood
Mulan arrived at the shelter after her owners surrendered her when their landlord forced them to give her up. Shy and undersocialized, she suddenly found herself without a home.
Unfamiliar with people and other dogs, she relied on instinct to protect herself. For 13 long days, she never left her kennel, barking defensively at anyone who came too close.
That’s when a volunteer contacted Martha Moore, vice president of Friends of Guilford County Animal Shelter in North Carolina, asking if she could help.
“She was so emotionally shut down and not letting anyone near her kennel. She had, by the end of the day, to leave the shelter or she would be put down,” Mulan’s foster mom told The Dodo.
Martha stepped in immediately, spending two full hours sitting quietly near the kennel, patiently earning Mulan’s trust. Eventually, the frightened dog allowed Martha to slip a leash over her head and lead her to safety.
Life in foster care was not easy at first. Nervous and unsettled, Mulan even tore apart a room one day. But instead of reacting with anger, Martha chose patience.
Sitting quietly on the floor, ignoring the mess, and offering a treat, Martha earned Mulan’s trust. In a turning moment, Mulan approached and gently licked her face, as if to say, “Thank you for not giving up on me.”
From Timid To Thriving
That moment began Mulan’s transformation. Gradually, she started opening her heart to her foster family.
Within two weeks, she was visibly different. While she still needed a few minutes to warm up to strangers, she became more relaxed and eager to socialize.
“Mulan is a sensitive girl and needs about 15 minutes to warm up to new people. Once you give her time to get comfortable, you’ll have a friend for life,” Martha explained.
She even began enjoying belly rubs, hugs, and snuggles from her foster mom, something that once seemed impossible.
“Mulan loves playing with other dogs, shares her toys and food/water bowls nicely, and even gets along with cats! The perfect package,” Martha happily shared on Facebook.
After two months of steady care, patience, and gentle socialization, Mulan transformed into an entirely different dog.
When adoption day arrived, she was prepared to meet her forever family. She found a home ready to provide what she needed most: kindness, understanding, and unconditional affection.
Her path from being dismissed as “aggressive” to becoming a beloved companion demonstrates the true power of second chances.
Now, with her new family, Mulan finally enjoys the life she was meant to have, one overflowing with happiness, comfort, and endless love.
