The situation with overcrowded shelters is getting worse every day. Shelter employees, dog lovers, and dog enthusiasts constantly point to alarming data about the number of dogs left in shelters.
Unfortunately, for many people, these are just sheer numbers. They are often unable to understand that those are living beings behind whom numerous sad and dramatic stories are hidden.
That is exactly why we are trying to share as many such stories as possible to raise awareness of this problem, and today’s story is one of them.
It’s about a shelter dog named Carlo whose gaze peeks through a crack in his kennel every day. He is always full of hope that someone will pick him up and bring him happiness.
Heartbreaking Gaze
A six-year-old dog, Carlo, who is now already a long-term resident of Longmont Humane Society, an animal shelter in Longmont, Colorado, is dreaming of a forever home every day.
The shelter workers and volunteers who fell in love with him during all these months he spent there noticed his desire in a specific way. That can be best seen in a TikTok video shared by @3coloradodogs.
“When you stare out the crack of your kennel every single day patiently waiting for someone to finally pick you,” it is written in the video. “And all you can do is hope someone will finally notice you.”
The video shows Carlo’s daily longing for a forever home, which he demonstrates through his heartbreaking gaze pouring out of the kennel crack.

His sad reality is something that motivated these people to share the video on TikTok in the hope it would help him meet his happy ending.
“Whenever he looks through the crack, it makes me feel a bit sad because I know he wants to get adopted so badly and he’s just looking for his forever person,” Shellby Hall, a shelter volunteer, told Newsweek.
Yet, Hall also emphasized that she is very happy for Carlo because he always gets excited when he sees her through that crack as he knows it’s time to go for a walk with her.
Just because of this positive energy despite all the hardships, she would love to see him with someone whom Carlo could look forward to even more often in this same way.
Encouraging Reactions
Since Hall shared the video on TikTok, Carlo’s heartbreaking gaze hasn’t been seen only by the employees and volunteers of the shelter in Longmont, Colorado, but by numerous people all around the world.
There were a lot of reactions and we have singled out a few of them.

In the end, Hall said this dog would make “the best addition” to a new family, thanks to his lovable and friendly personality.
“He’s such a good dog. He truly just wants a family that will love him as much as he would love them,” she said.
