An injured dog limped painfully through the middle of a busy road, dodging cars and struggling to keep herself safe.
Even though she was scared and in discomfort, the pup held onto hope that someone kind-hearted would notice her and offer help.
Fortunately, Ivy and Jaina Spagis, founders of Cats of San Bernardino, a California-based cat rescue, noticed the pup. They pulled over and rushed to her side.
It was evident right away that she had been hurt, most likely by a car, and she needed urgent assistance to survive.
Approaching Reina With Caution
Ivy moved slowly, aware that sudden movements could frighten the pup further.
Reina, as she would soon be named, seemed to sense that these humans were there to help her. She walked toward them as if she understood that her safety depended on their compassion.
When Ivy lifted her into her arms, Reina melted against her, scared yet trusting.
“As soon as I got her in my arms, she kind of just melted into me,” Ivy told The Dodo.
During the short drive to the veterinary clinic, Reina remained nestled in Ivy’s arms, refusing to let go. Ivy gently stroked her fur, offering comfort and reassurance that everything would be alright.
Once at the vet, Reina underwent a full examination and had to remain overnight for observation. X-rays revealed that her front leg was broken.
The veterinarian administered pain medication and placed her leg in a cast, which she would wear for three weeks.
The next day, when Ivy and Jaina returned to pick her up, Reina greeted them with a wagging tail and an unmistakable smile, already showing signs of relief and happiness.
Her rescuers were thrilled to learn that the broken leg was her only major injury and that she was expected to make a full recovery.
Settling Into A Safe Home
Ivy and Jaina brought Reina home and set up a warm, comfortable space for her to rest. Reina immediately snuggled into her new bed, seeming to understand she was finally safe.
Over the following days, Reina spent quality time with her rescuers, taking in every gentle touch and kind word. Despite the pain she had endured, she radiated gratitude and happiness. Her tail wagged constantly, and her smile seemed to reflect pure joy at her newfound safety and care.
Meghan, a volunteer with Cats of San Bernardino, visited and immediately fell in love with Reina. She decided to adopt her, offering the pup a permanent home filled with love and attention.
Reina adapted quickly, learning to play and interact with her new doggy siblings. Over time, she became a confident, happy dog, forming strong bonds with her forever mom and enjoying every moment of her safe, loving environment.
Now, Reina lives her best life in California, adored by her family. Her journey from fear and injury to safety and happiness stands as a testament to the difference that kind humans can make.
Both Reina and her mom feel incredibly lucky to have found each other, and Reina’s constant smile shows how much she finally trusts and loves her new life.
