Searching For A Mother In Need
The team at Stray Rescue of St. Louis began receiving reports about a stray mama dog wandering a neighborhood. Each time they arrived to help her, she disappeared before they could get close.
Her terrified behavior made sense. She had babies somewhere, and she was taking no chances.
For two weeks, Donna and Natalie searched for her without giving up hope. Eventually, the day came when they finally caught sight of her and refused to lose her again.
“I finally spotted her, and just followed her down a sidewalk,” Donna told The Dodo. “But wasn’t an option to just pick her up and not find the puppies.”
Donna quietly trailed her as she slipped into the basement of an abandoned home. At the top of a crumbling staircase, she found the mother curled around a cluster of newborn pups.
The scene was fragile and heartrending. The mama was nursing her babies, so Donna stayed patient and spoke gently, hoping to earn her trust.
When Natalie arrived, the two worked together to carefully guide a leash onto the frightened dog.
