Animal rescue rarely gives anyone time to prepare their heart.
A call can come in suddenly, and the people who answer it have no way of knowing whether they are about to find fear, pain, surprise, or something even harder to take in.
For Donna Lochmann and the Stray Rescue of St. Louis team, the timing already felt urgent. Storm clouds were beginning to build, so they went out to check on animals before the weather had the chance to get worse.
While they were moving through a neighborhood park, something near the picnic tables made them look closer.
At first, it was just a small figure tucked in close, easy to miss if their eyes had moved past it too quickly. But the nearer the volunteers got, the clearer the situation became.
And what they saw was far more heartbreaking than they expected.
A Frightened Little Face
A tiny puppy peeked out from behind the benches, clearly terrified. When the rescuers approached, they discovered he had been tied to a picnic table and left behind.
No one knew how long he had remained there with no food or water, but his weak condition suggested he had endured hardship for quite a while.
Shaking and overwhelmed, the small dog seemed lost and unsure of what to expect after being abandoned by the people he relied on.
His struggle did not end there. His coat was severely affected by ringworm.
“It rained on and off this week, some thunderstorms mixed in, here in St. Louis. This little puppy was tied up and left at a park, and he’s COVERED in ringworm,” the rescue shared in a Facebook post.
At first, he kept his distance. He barked in fear, trying to shield himself from the rescuers even though they only wanted to help.
But with calm voices, gentle movements, and the help of a few tasty treats, his fear slowly faded. The team managed to loop a leash around his neck and guide him away from the picnic table.
“He was so brave when we first approached, but then as soon as we got in the Jeep he curled up on Donna’s lap and let out a deep sigh – that sigh said so much,” SRSL explained.
Once inside the vehicle, the once-nervous pup transformed completely. He tucked himself into Donna’s arms, relaxing for the first time in who knows how long.
A New Start For Wilbur
Aside from the ringworm, the puppy’s health was fairly stable. Back at SRSL, staff immediately began treating him with medicated baths to soothe his irritated skin.
“He’ll get medicated baths and will be ready for foster in just a few short days. He’ll never have to be lonely or muster up that much bravery ever again,” the rescue promised.
Now named Wilbur, the little pup is adjusting well and showing more confidence with each new day.
Once he completes his treatment, Wilbur will move into a foster home where he will be surrounded by affection and care. The team hopes that after his recovery, a loving family will come forward to give him the permanent home he deserves.
