For people who dedicate their lives to rescuing animals, the work is heavy in more ways than one.
It is not just the physical effort that wears on them, but the emotional weight of seeing animals who have been hurt, neglected, or left with no one.
One morning in Othello, Washington, the team at Adams County Pet Rescue was hoping for a normal, uneventful day.
Instead, they came across something that left them shaken.
Sitting on the sidewalk outside the facility was a single cardboard box.
As they walked toward it, that awful feeling crept in, and once they opened it, they realized their worry had been right.
Seven Vulnerable Puppies Abandoned
The box bore a handwritten note: “Found on HWY 17.”
Inside were seven tiny puppies, no older than nine weeks, huddled together and wide-eyed with confusion.
The scene was immediate proof of cruelty, leaving the rescuers heartbroken and frustrated in equal measure.
“I think that was the general response from everyone here that day,” rescue staff member Anita Plancarte told The Dodo. “‘Not again.’”
The team quickly brought the pups inside, moving with urgency and care.
Though shaken by abandonment, the puppies showed no serious behavioral issues, responding slowly but positively to gentle attention.
“They seemed a little, tiny bit … maybe scared?” Anita said. “But not in an aggressive way or trying to bite people. They’re just unsure.”
The staff’s experience and patience allowed the little ones to begin trusting humans again.
Rallying Support And Awareness
Caring for seven young puppies strained the shelter’s already limited resources.
With supplies like wet food and puppy kibble running low, the team reached out on their Facebook page,requesting donations to ensure the pups’ needs were met.
In the same post, they voiced their frustration and emphasized the broader issue, urging the community to prevent such abandonments in the future.
“Crazy things happen to us all the time! We could decide to not share all the times this happen and just keep it to ourselves or we can share it with you. We share with you so people can see why we are full, why we need more people to spay and neuter their dogs and why when people are on the waiting list and wondering why it’s taking so long, they can see the reality of it. Why our staff is burned out along with every shelter staff person in Washington state!

Thanks to the team’s swift action, these seven puppies are now safe and receiving care. Yet the story serves as a stark reminder: not every abandoned animal is so fortunate.
Awareness and intervention remain essential to protect vulnerable lives from ending up in the same situation again.
