When Rachel Fusaro arrived at Southern Oregon Humane Society in Medford, Oregon, where she volunteers, she met Daffodil and learned her backstory.
The heavily pregnant doggo whose owners abandoned her needed a loving home where she could safely deliver her babies.
The rescue staff wasn’t sure whether Daffodil was used for breeding, but it was evident that she was neglected and malnourished.
Fusaro felt moved by Daffodil’s situation and decided to foster her and her future puppies.
Daffodil Welcomes Her Babies Into The World
Ever since Fusaro brought her home, Daffodil trusted her. She sensed that her foster mom was there to help her.
Fusaro cared for the doggo and bought her a whelping box.
She gave her a lot of love and Daffodil soaked up all her cuddles. Whenever Fusaro would stop petting her, the doggo would paw at her gently to remind her to continue stroking her.
Shortly after Daffodil arrived at her foster home, she went into labor and gave birth to nine puppies in five hours.
Her foster mom stayed by her side, helping and offering comfort and love. She was amazed by her strength and considered the whole experience life-changing.
“Watching Daffodil bring life into a world that treated her so poorly with such grace changed everything within me,” Fusaro wrote on Instagram.
Caring For The Canine Family
Fusaro slept in the same room with the mama dog and her babies in order to make sure that she was there whenever they needed her.
Since Daffodil had been neglected in the past, she needed extra care after giving birth. Fortunately, Fusaro pampered her and the babies with care.
The adorable puppies were named Birdie, Maple, Aura, Juniper, Grover, Posie, Beau, Moss, and Huckleberry.
Although all the furbabies seemed to be thriving, sadly, Maple, Juniper, and Posie got sick and crossed the rainbow bridge when they were three-and-a-half weeks old.
The heartbreaking event left Fusaro devastated, but she had to be strong for Daffodil and the surviving babies.
Finding Happiness
She continued treating them affectionately, and they flourished into playful and healthy pups. Once they were ready, the puppies were put up for adoption through the Oregon shelter.
Fusaro, who wasn’t thinking about keeping any puppies, changed her mind when she realized that she fell head over heels in love with Aura. She officially adopted her.
All the puppies found forever homes, and they lived nearby so they could visit each other.
Daffodil continued recovering in Fusaro’s home. Her foster mom loved her immensely and promised her that the shelter would find her the perfect forever home.
And, she fulfilled her promise!
An amazing retired couple saw Daffodil and became smitten with her. They adopted her and gave her a ton of love.
Daffodil left her sad past behind and she enjoys her life in her new home.
