Iowa Pittie Who Endured Abuse, Surrender, And Years In A Shelter Still Dreams Of A Family

When you first meet Avery, a striking split-toned Pittie, you might assume she grew up in a joyful home filled with affection.

Sadly, her past tells a very different story.

This is the journey of a resilient, determined pup who refuses to let go of her dream of finding a forever family.

Meet Avery

Avery is a three-year-old Pit Bull whose first year was marked by abuse and neglect. After being removed from that unsafe situation, she spent the next two years living at a shelter.

Her current caretakers at the Marion County Humane Society in Knoxville, Iowa, do everything they can to keep her comfortable. They are proud to see how grateful Avery is for every bit of care she receives.

She was surrendered to the Iowa shelter by an estranged member of her former family, who reported seeing “many marks on her as if she were beaten with a stick.”

The details of her past remained unclear, yet the most important thing was certain. She was finally far from harm.

At first, Avery seemed confused by her new surroundings. Love and steady care were unfamiliar. According to the team at Marion County Humane Society, it did not take long before she “learned to be loved.”

Life at the Shelter

Even once she settled in, Avery faced a few more challenges.

A veterinary exam revealed a low grade heart murmur that requires medication and routine monitoring. While she may need some lifestyle adjustments as she matures, everyone agrees these should not limit her ability to enjoy life.

She also copes with allergies affecting her paws and skin, which are treated with medication. Staff members believe these issues may improve once she is in a stable home environment.

Avery also endured a frightening incident at the shelter when another Pit Bull attacked her during treat time.

“She was severely attacked by one at the shelter. Totally out of the blue. Fortunately, we were able to pour water on them and got them apart, but Avery was severely injured and had to be rushed to an emergency vet,” the humane society explains in a Facebook post.

Looking for a Home

Although Avery appreciates the kindness of her temporary home, she longs for a place of her own. She did get adopted once, but was returned the very same day.

She did not let that disappointment break her spirit.

Avery still believes the right family is out there. She is friendly with people and gets along with many dogs, though she does not do well with cats. She loves tug of war, crunching on ice cubes, and savoring tasty treats. With her warm nature and playful side, she will brighten any home.If you are interested in giving this sweet girl the future she deserves, please reach out to the Marion County Humane Society for more information.
