Dog abuse isn’t really a new thing, but it constantly and repeatedly keeps breaking our hearts.
Maya isn’t just the exhibit of abuse, though. She represents all the underdogs that have ever experienced neglect, abandonment, or mistreatment in their lives. She’s a symbol of resilience and a sad testament to what irresponsible humans can do.
Fortunately, Maya’s heartbreaking story didn’t end there, in the middle of nowhere. Quite the opposite, it just began!
Maya’s Story Of Abandonment

A woman named April witnessed the moment Maya’s owner tied her to a fence on a deserted street and walked away for good. Realizing he wasn’t coming back, April immediately contacted Underdog Heroes in California.
“Sweet girl Maya was overbred, abused, neglected, and discarded like trash, chained up in over 100 degree weather without food or water in the middle of nowhere,” UH wrote on Facebook.
April couldn’t believe someone could do something so cruel.
“She was just looking at me with these really sad eyes. I couldn’t understand why the owner had just left her there,” April told The Dodo.

April stayed with Maya until volunteers from the rescue arrived.
The pit bull was terrified and insecure. Her body was crawling with fleas and scabies, and she was still lactating, which made her abandonment even more heartbreaking. She endured several surgeries and worked with a trainer who helped her learn the basics.
When she was finally ready, Maya was placed in a foster home.
“She spent some time with our trainer, and after several months, we were finally able to find her the most amazing foster family who soon decided they could not let her go and she is now home forever,” the rescue wrote.

Claire and Tom were overjoyed to welcome Maya.
Though still timid from her past, she adjusted beautifully to her new surroundings.
Finding A Forever Foster Family

It didn’t take long for Claire and Tom to realize they couldn’t imagine life without Maya. She blended into their family as though she had always belonged.
So they made the choice to keep her forever.
“The plan was just to foster her and we fell in love with her, and we couldn’t let her go. Having Maya now has completed our family and we plan a lot of trips around her,” Tom and Claire told The Dodo.
Now the trio shares countless adventures. Maya loves playing in the yard with her humans, but she’s also an eager explorer. Hiking quickly became one of her favorite activities, and her family makes travel plans with her in mind.
One of the highlights was her first glamping trip.
We love to go hiking and we love to go on adventures,” they said.

For her outdoor getaway, Maya wore her own jacket to keep warm.
Inside the cabin, she eagerly explored every corner. She adored the big window, the view, and above all, the chance to enjoy it all beside her beloved owners.
After the abuse and neglect she endured, Maya is finally where she belongs, in a safe home filled with love.
Have a wonderful life, Maya!
