Emaciated Dog Clung To Life In A Junkyard Until A North Carolina Veterinary Student Changed His Path
After being found clinging to life in a Caribbean junkyard, a fearful dog found his soulmate in a North Carolina veterinary student. Eight years later, their bond is stronger than ever.
A World Of Fear

When a dog has been forced to survive on his own in harsh conditions, the world can seem like a terrifying place.
For one nervous pup, every day was a battle against the odds. He truly believed that the world was out to get him, and his fragile body reflected the hardships he had endured.
But a chance encounter with a compassionate veterinary student from North Carolina would change his trajectory entirely. It was a meeting that would heal not only his broken body, but his fearful heart.
His journey from a desperate stray to a beloved family member proves just how resilient a dog’s spirit can be when given a second chance.
Clinging To Life In A Junkyard

Before he knew the comforts of a loving home, the dog, later named Reggie, lived on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts.
He was discovered in a local junkyard, completely emaciated and suffering from multiple diseases. He was, quite literally, hanging on for dear life.
Thankfully, the owner of the junkyard allowed rescuers to step in. They were given permission to take care of him and provide the urgent medical attention he so desperately needed.
A Fateful Meeting

At the time, Allie was just starting veterinary school down on St. Kitts. Being far from home, she found herself missing her own dogs terribly.
She ended up meeting quite a few local dogs during her studies, but her encounter with Reggie was different. The moment they saw each other, they simply locked eyes.
Reggie was whining and absolutely adamant about being in Allie’s arms. Even though he was still in the recovery phase from his illnesses, he knew exactly who he wanted to go home with.
Overcoming The Reactivity

Allie lived on the island for two years, and Reggie was by her side the entire time. However, his transition to a domestic life wasn’t without its hurdles.
Because of his traumatic past, Reggie struggled with a lot of reactivity at first. He would often lunge and bark at almost anything that startled him.
Allie dedicated herself to helping him feel safe. They went through a lot of slow, patient training and adjustments to help him realize he no longer needed to be on the defensive.
A One-Way Ticket To The States

As the two years in St. Kitts came to a close, there was no question about Reggie’s future. Allie and her boyfriend, who is now her husband, had formed an unbreakable bond with the dog.
They knew he was meant to be part of their family forever. When it was time to move back to the United States, Reggie was coming with them.
Leaving his junkyard past far behind, Reggie traded the Caribbean for a beautiful new life in North Carolina.
The Ultimate Foster Dad

Today, Reggie’s personality has completely blossomed. He is a goofy, grumbly, happy boy who loves doing cartwheels and zipping around his yard.
His family has grown to include three dogs and four cats, all rescued from situations where they needed help. As a veterinary professional, Allie admits it’s hard to say no to pets in need.
They have also welcomed countless foster animals into their home. Reggie has stepped up to become an amazing foster dad, showing the new arrivals the ropes and teaching them how to play appropriately.
Managing A Chronic Condition

Despite his joyful spirit, Reggie has been a bit of a “chronic kid” when it comes to his health. He was diagnosed with a portosystemic liver shunt, a condition where a vessel improperly shunts blood past the liver.
This condition can predispose dogs to various illnesses, requiring strict management. Allie and her husband made specific life changes, including adjusting Reggie’s diet and monitoring him closely.
Thanks to their diligent care, Reggie is doing remarkably well. He hasn’t shown the severe signs typically associated with liver shunts.
A Special Backpack For A Tired Hiker

As Reggie has gotten older, he has developed a little bit of arthritis. He used to love going on long hikes, both on the island and in the mountains of North Carolina.
Because the steep mountain trails are now too much for his joints, his parents found a creative solution. They bought a special dog-carrying backpack just for him.
Whenever he gets tired on the trail, he gets to ride in the backpack. Allie jokes that he absolutely loves it because he is “such a baby” who adores being cuddled.
Eight Years With A Heart Dog

Over the past eight years, Allie and Reggie have been through every difficulty together. They have reached a point where they can understand each other purely through body language.
Reggie still feels a strong urge to be Allie’s protector, though they’ve done plenty of training to remind him that he can just relax and be a dog.
He is undeniably their “heart dog.” After everything he survived in that junkyard, his family cherishes every single day they get to spend with him as one more special gift.
