Mandy, a New York resident, was deeply moved by the story of a dog who had spent the first two years of her life locked inside a cage.

The pup, named Maya, had endured an unimaginable start to life.

In 2019, a local news reporter in South Korea discovered Maya and her brother confined in a cage at a dog meat facility.

It was a heartbreaking situation that required immediate intervention to save their lives.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Korean K9 Rescue, a negotiation was made to secure the release of both Maya and her brother.

They were finally free from the terrible conditions they had known since birth.

The siblings were taken to a local shelter, where Maya spent the next year of her life recovering.

While she was finally safe from harm, she still didn’t know what a real home felt like.

Generous sponsors helped raise the funds needed to fly the dogs to the United States for a second chance.

Maya’s journey brought her to an adoption event in New York, which is where Mandy first laid eyes on her.

“She was definitely timid, shy, nervous, all of the things,” Mandy recalled of their first encounter.

Despite the dog’s fears, Mandy knew she had to help, and they left the event with Maya that very day.

Once Maya arrived at her new home, her family knew they had to let her do everything at her own pace.

She claimed a bedroom that was tucked away, using it as her personal safe space.

For the first couple of weeks, she spent most of her time hiding in that quiet room.

Occasionally, she would peek out while her new family watched TV, only to quickly retreat back to safety.

Everything in a normal household was completely foreign to the rescue pup.

“You’ve been in a shelter and a cage. You’ve never seen a TV before, so that was a little bit scary for her,” Mandy explained.

Maya was trying to work up the courage to join the family, but she just wasn’t ready yet.

For the entire first year, she seemed to be wondering what was going to happen next, unable to fully settle into her new routine.

The family’s endless patience finally paid off on one ordinary day out in the yard.

Suddenly, Maya got a case of the “zoomies,” sprinting around with pure, unbridled joy.

“Her eyes look like they’re just going to like burst,” Mandy said of the incredible moment.

It was a magical turning point where she finally let her guard down and showed how happy she could be.

As Maya’s walls came down, she started to play with the other dogs in the home.

One dog in particular, Finn, was immediately enamored with his new sister.

While Finn didn’t take to all dogs right away, Mandy felt he could sense Maya’s gentle heart and the hardships she had been through.

His quiet companionship helped her realize she was truly part of a pack.

It took over two years for Maya to become deeply attached to her humans, but her transformation is nothing short of incredible.

Today, the once-timid dog gets the zoomies every single day.

Her family is constantly amazed by her intelligence, joking that she learned English faster than any of their other pets.

If they ask her a question in a full sentence, like if it’s time for a walk, she completely understands.

In the early days, if Mandy went on a business trip, Maya would disconnect, assuming her human was gone for good.

Now, she gets incredibly excited when her family comes home, finally understanding that this love is permanent.

In a wonderful twist of fate, Maya’s brother was also adopted by a family in Queens, meaning both siblings are now living their best lives.

While Mandy still gets emotional thinking about what could have been, she prefers to focus on the beautiful, happy reality Maya gets to experience every single day.
