New York Man Spots A Duffel Bag By A Trash Can And Freezes When He Sees What’s Inside

On a chilly day in Albany, New York, a passerby noticed something strange near a trash can.

A duffel bag lay zipped shut, and through a tiny gap in the fabric, a pair of frightened eyes looked out.

A Shocking Find Near The Trash

Inside the bag, the Good Samaritan discovered a small brown-and-black tiger cat trapped with no way to escape.

They immediately reached out to animal control, and the cat was taken to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS), the oldest and largest animal welfare organization in New York.

Despite being abandoned so cruelly, the cat, later named Newt, showed kindness from the moment she arrived.

“I remember saying, ‘How could anyone throw you in the trash? You’re so sweet and cuddly!’ She was purring and rubbing against us for pets, almost as if to say, ‘Thank you for saving me,’” said Kara Murry, intake coordinator at MHHS, in her interview with The Dodo.

Newt was given a full exam, food, and fresh water as she began her recovery.

Her friendly nature quickly captured attention at the shelter.

“She came right up to me for pets and love the first time I met her, which was two days after she arrived. [She] was very sweet and wanted cuddles and loved playing with pipe cleaners,” said Heather Ellis, a veterinary assistant at MHHS.

A New Beginning With Someone Who Saw Her Worth

Newt’s tender personality made it easy for her to find a family. Before long, a man searching for a companion stopped by the shelter and felt an immediate bond with her. He knew she was meant to go home with him.

Now, Newt enjoys the comfort and affection she was denied before.

“As they say, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. And this sweet girl is a truly wonderful treasure for her new dad,” shared Marguerite Pearson, MHHS’s director of marketing and communications.

Newt’s days of fear and confinement are behind her. She will spend the rest of her life safe, cherished, and valued, just as she always deserved.
