Washington Hiker Watches Her Loyal Pup Guard Her From A Threat She Cannot See

As a dog owner myself, I have never been in a situation where my pup had to place himself between me and danger.

It was not because he was not brave enough. Those moments simply never happened. I never had to depend on him to become my protector.

Still, I can imagine it would be something impossible to forget. Some dogs seem to carry those instincts naturally, always watching, always aware, and always prepared to do whatever they can to keep their people safe.

One owner experienced that kind of loyalty for herself. Her dog, Shona, was loving and devoted, the type who stayed close even when there did not seem to be any particular reason. That constant closeness became the beginning of a story worth sharing.

Shona Picks Up On Something Amber Misses

Amber Palmer set out to explore a new hiking trail tucked deep in the Washington woods, bringing Shona along for the adventure.

They drove to the trailhead, excited for the day ahead. Yet as they prepared to step out of the car, Shona’s demeanor shifted.

From inside the vehicle, she began to growl, her body tense as if she was warning Amber of something unseen. Amber scanned the area but saw nothing unusual.

Puzzled, she tried to soothe Shona, but the dog refused to relax, her growls steady and insistent at whatever Amber could not detect.

Amber decided to trust her dog’s instincts. She changed their plans and chose a different trail instead.

It wasn’t the first time Shona had shown uncanny awareness. Amber had noticed her spotting animals in the distance before, even though she had never been trained for it.

There was another time when Amber was exercising on her cardio machine. Shona panicked, convinced the strange contraption was a threat. In her mind, that odd device was dangerous to the person she loved most.

Reactions To A Dog’s Protective Nature

Amber, still surprised by Shona’s behavior in the woods, shared the story on TikTok to hear what others thought.

Comments poured in, many offering similar experiences and insights.

One person commented: “My uncle had a dog that never barked or growled. Until one day, dog wouldn’t get out of the truck and was growling like crazy. Mountain lion came running by. They know when something is up.

It seemed entirely possible Shona had sensed something Amber couldn’t. Choosing to trust her was the right move.

Another person said: “Ridgebacks were bred to hunt lions originally. Definitely listen to her. She isn’t playing around.

Amber hadn’t known that detail, but it was clear Shona’s senses were sharp, and whatever she picked up on was serious enough to keep her firmly inside the car.

Lastly, somebody commented: “It’s something I’d take especially seriously if it’s out of character for your dog. They have senses well beyond ours.. they know and notice so much.

It leaves an open question of what exactly was out there in the woods that unsettled Shona so deeply. We may never know, though a mountain lion seems like a reasonable possibility.

Amber’s experience is a reminder of the importance of listening when our dogs try to warn us.

Whether it is something harmless, like a piece of exercise equipment, or something truly dangerous, their instincts are worth paying attention to.
