Fostering a rescue dog is a journey filled with both immense joy and inevitable heartbreak. For one young animal advocate in Georgia, opening his home to a tiny puppy named Bolt meant gaining a best friend for the entire summer.

They spent countless hours together, forming a bond that made the thought of parting incredibly difficult. The young boy knew that their time together was temporary, but that didn’t make the impending farewell any easier.

With every foster dog, the ultimate goal is always to say goodbye so they can start their new lives. Even though he knew Bolt was heading to a wonderful forever family, letting go of his favorite wrestling buddy would require a brave heart.

A Mission Born At Four Years Old

This young boy’s dedication to animals didn’t start with Bolt. He has been actively helping shelter dogs since he was just four years old.

At that tender age, he learned a harsh reality: if dogs in overcrowded shelters don’t find homes, they don’t get to live. To his four-year-old mind, the solution was simple and clear.

“I was just like, ‘Oh, well, let’s just fix that,'” he recalled. From that moment on, he dedicated his childhood to making sure as many dogs as possible got a second chance.

Shining A Light On The Scared Ones

With the unwavering support of his mom, the boy began visiting local animal shelters. Together, they started making videos to help showcase the dogs to potential adopters.

They made a point to focus on the dogs who needed the most help—the ones who were shut-down, terrified, or older. One such dog was Rosalinda, a sweet 13-year-old who had been surrendered by her owner.

By sitting with the scared dogs and showing their true personalities on camera, the duo helped countless forgotten animals catch the eye of loving families.

The Birth Of Project Freedom Ride

After a year of making shelter videos, the family realized they could do even more. They saw that some areas had too many dogs, while others had families waiting to adopt.

This realization led to the creation of Project Freedom Ride. The initiative was designed to transport dogs from high-kill areas in Texas all the way up to places like Washington.

Since 2015, through their transports, videos, and fostering efforts, they have successfully helped more than 4,800 dogs find their way to safety and love.

While organizing massive transports, the family also continued to foster dogs in their own home. That’s how Bolt entered the picture.

Bolt arrived as just a tiny puppy right at the beginning of summer break. Because school was out, the boy had plenty of free time to dedicate to his new furry houseguest.

The timing was perfect. The two of them spent nearly every waking moment together, allowing Bolt to grow confident and loved in a safe environment.

Morning Routines And Playtime

Life with Bolt quickly settled into a fun and active routine. Every morning, the boy made sure to get Bolt outside nice and early.

The puppy loved to run out into the yard and play with the other resident dogs. Wrestling in the morning grass quickly became Bolt’s absolute favorite way to start the day.

After burning off his puppy energy, Bolt would happily eat his breakfast, thriving under the gentle care and structure provided by his young foster brother.

Making The Last Day Special

As the summer days passed, Bolt grew into a healthy, happy dog. Eventually, the news they had been working toward finally arrived: Bolt had found his forever family.

Knowing it was Bolt’s last day with them, the boy wanted to make sure his foster brother felt incredibly special before hitting the road.

They decided to skip the usual routine and take Bolt on a fun outing to celebrate his graduation from foster care to a permanent home.

A Drive-Thru Goodbye

To give Bolt the ultimate send-off, they pulled up to a local drive-thru. The boy leaned out the window and asked if they had any special treats for dogs.

The restaurant offered up a chili cheese dog, which Bolt eagerly devoured. It was a messy, joyful treat that perfectly capped off his wonderful summer in foster care.

With a full belly and a happy heart, Bolt was finally ready for the next big step. The boy gave his wrestling buddy one last hug, promising him he was going to have a great life.

With the goodbyes said, it was time for Bolt to travel to his new life. The boy’s dad and a family friend named Sarah loaded Bolt into the vehicle.

They embarked on a long drive, transporting the lucky pup all the way from Georgia down to his waiting family in Florida.

It was a quiet ride, but one filled with hope. Bolt was leaving behind the only home he remembered, but he was heading toward a family that had been dreaming of his arrival.

Bolt was introduced to his new dog siblings and quickly settled into his new environment. Updates showed him thriving, running around, and looking absolutely thrilled with his new life.

Back home, the young boy received the news of Bolt’s successful adoption. Seeing his former foster puppy so happy made the difficult goodbye entirely worth it, fueling his passion to save the next dog in need.
