Just like people, dogs deeply grieve the loss of their family members. It can take weeks or even months for them to heal, and even then, they still need patience, reassurance, and compassion.
That was the heartbreaking reality for two dogs in Nuevo, California, who lost their beloved owner after a long illness. Left alone in their home, Debby and Gidget huddled together on a couch, mourning the only person they had ever known.
Confused, broken, and without guidance, they remained frozen in place until a kindhearted rescue team arrived to help.
Clinging To Each Other

Doreen, a woman devastated by her friend’s passing, reached out to Hope For Paws about Debby and Gidget about Debby and Gidget, the two dogs left behind.
Although she wanted nothing more than to comfort them, the pups were too frightened to let her near. No matter how much she coaxed with food or treats, they would only emerge after she left, quickly grabbing the food before disappearing back inside.
Determined to save them, HFP rescuers Katie McKittrick and Alex Babcock drove two hours from Los Angeles to meet Doreen and assess the situation.

The rescuers immediately recognized that the dogs’ fear was perfectly normal. Both had endured the trauma of losing their human, and the grief kept them paralyzed with anxiety.
Once inside, they found Debby and Gidget curled up on a couch, refusing to move. Their wide, terrified eyes revealed just how shattered they were.

Katie gently approached the trembling dogs, using a soft snare to secure them one at a time. The process was slow and delicate, but soon both sisters were safely crated and carried out of the house.
For Doreen, the moment was overwhelming. She knew Debby and Gidget had a long road ahead, but thanks to the rescue team, they now had a chance at healing.
Foster Families Help The Grieving Dogs Trust Again

After their first medical exams and care, Debby and Gidget were placed with fosters through L A Animal Rescue. The team promised to provide the sisters with a safe space while they adjusted to life without their owner.
At the start, both dogs struggled with interaction. They avoided people and kept close to each other, unsure of how to cope. But slowly, their walls began to fall.
Over time, their foster families discovered their distinct personalities. Gidget naturally stepped into the role of leader, while Debby clung to her side for reassurance. To her, Gidget was a protector, sister, and safe place.

“Gidget is the more protective of the pair. She is the leader of the pack and likes to take charge. She is more vocal and hands on. She is very sweet and affectionate and loves to give kisses and cuddle once she gets to know you,” the HFP team wrote on their website.
Months later, both dogs had blossomed into affectionate companions. They wagged their tails, sought cuddles, and embraced life with their fosters.
Now, Debby and Gidget are ready to meet forever families. When the right adopters arrive, these two resilient sisters are sure to bring endless love and joy into their new homes.
