Few things are sadder than a dog whose entire existence is reduced to breeding. These dogs often live under harsh conditions, neglected, mistreated, and then tossed aside once they are no longer “useful.”
Sadly, this was the case for a sweet pup named Ducky. Her story is heartbreaking, but thankfully, kind people stepped in to give her the chance she always deserved.
Ducky’s Backstory
Colin first met Ducky through Lil Rascals Dog Rescue, a Florida-based organization. The moment she laid eyes on her, Colin felt an instant connection and agreed to foster the pup until a permanent home could be found.
Rescue staff told Colin that Ducky had originally been purchased by a family who intended to use her strictly for breeding. But when they discovered she had health issues, they decided she was no longer worth keeping.
In an interview with GeoBeats Animals, Colin explained: “Due to some medical complications that she was going through which we’ve addressed since she’s been with us, we were told they just don’t wanna bother with it anymore.”
Instead of receiving care, Ducky was surrendered to a shelter. That’s when Colin stepped up to foster her, determined to help this gentle soul.
Ducky’s health issues were numerous — she suffered from skin and eye infections, along with a painful condition that caused her eyelids to turn inward. Despite these problems, Colin immediately began working on her recovery, staying by her side every step of the way.
Ducky Is Pure Sunshine
Once Ducky settled into Colin’s Florida home, she adjusted remarkably fast. She seemed to understand right away that she was finally safe.
“I think she right off the bat knew that I was here to help protect her and keep her safe,” Colin said.
Ducky also got to meet Mako, Colin’s first and only “foster fail.” The two dogs became inseparable playmates, enjoying each other’s company and running around the house together.
There was also another pup in the household, Kona. Unlike Mako, Kona wasn’t thrilled about the new arrival. She often sulked, feeling like Ducky was stealing her spotlight. Colin even caught her wearing a pout from time to time.
Even so, Kona and Ducky managed to coexist peacefully. While they weren’t as playful together as Ducky and Mako, they still got along well enough, and Ducky fit right into the pack.
Eventually, the time came for Ducky to move on to her forever home. For Colin, it was bittersweet. Saying goodbye to a foster dog is always the hardest part, especially after watching them heal and blossom.
“I speak for all foster parents when I say that one thing I think all of us wish we could make sure they knew is that they’re not being abandoned again,” Colin shared.
Though Colin’s heart ached, she found comfort in knowing that Ducky had finally found a loving family who would cherish her the way she deserved.
Now, Ducky is thriving in her new home, showered with affection and living the life her former owners never gave her.
