California Dog Sisters Struggle To Trust Again After Sudden Separation From Their Person

Dogs grieve in ways that look strikingly similar to humans, feeling the weight of loss just as deeply when someone they love is gone. Healing doesn’t happen overnight — it can take weeks or even months, and along the way, steady patience, comfort, and gentle reassurance make all the difference.

That was the painful situation facing two dogs in Nuevo, California, who were left on their own after their cherished owner passed away following a long illness.

Debby and Gidget curled up together on a couch, grieving the only person they had ever trusted. Disoriented and brokenhearted, they stayed right where they were, unsure of what to do next, until a caring rescue team stepped in to help them find their way forward.

Doreen, grieving the passing of her close friend, contacted Hope For Paws regarding Debby and Gidget, the two dogs left behind.

Even though her greatest wish was to console them, the pups were far too fearful to allow her near. No matter how much she tried with food or treats, they only crept out once she was gone, snatching the food quickly before darting back inside.

Resolved to bring them to safety, Hope For Paws rescuers Katie McKittrick and Alex Babcock traveled two hours from Los Angeles to meet Doreen and evaluate the situation.

The rescuers quickly recognized that the dogs’ fear was natural. The trauma of losing their human had left them paralyzed with anxiety and grief.

Inside the home, they found Debby and Gidget curled together on the couch, refusing to move. Their wide, terrified eyes reflected the depth of their heartbreak.

Katie approached the trembling sisters gently, using a soft snare to secure them individually. The process was slow and careful, but soon both dogs were safely crated and carried out of the house.

For Doreen, the moment was overwhelming, yet she knew the sisters now had a chance at healing thanks to the rescue team.

After receiving initial medical care, Debby and Gidget were placed with foster families through L A Animal Rescue. The organization provided the sisters a secure environment while they adjusted to life without their owner.

Initially, the dogs struggled with human interaction, remaining close to each other and hesitant to engage. Over time, their walls began to break down.

The fosters observed each dog’s unique personality. Gidget naturally assumed a protective role, while Debby sought comfort at her sister’s side. Gidget became a leader, protector, and source of reassurance for Debby.

“Gidget is the more protective of the pair. She is the leader of the pack and likes to take charge. She is more vocal and hands on. She is very sweet and affectionate and loves to give kisses and cuddle once she gets to know you,” the HFP team wrote on their website.

Months later, both sisters flourished into affectionate companions, wagging tails, seeking cuddles, and embracing life with their foster families.
Now, Debby and Gidget are ready to meet their forever homes. When the right adopters arrive, these resilient sisters will bring unwavering love and joy to their new fam
