Texas Dog Scheduled For Euthanasia Over Barking Gets A Life-Saving Second Chance

Moose is living proof that shelter dogs are not defined by their past.

With a bullet lodged in her lung and a history marked by hardship, this affectionate Pit Bull had one goal: to become everyone’s best friend.

But no one gave her the chance to prove it. She was scheduled for euthanasia just one day before Micky came across her story.

An extra kennel space delayed the procedure, and that brief window ultimately saved her life.

Breaking Through Misunderstood Labels

Micky, who would become Moose’s forever guardian, arrived just in time. Upon learning that Moose was on the brink of being put down, she didn’t hesitate. She submitted her adoption application immediately.

Moose boarded a transport bus in Houston, Texas, and five days later, she arrived in Virginia to meet Micky.

What made her situation even more heartbreaking was the reason listed for her behavioral euthanasia: she had barked at another dog.

“It’s really sad because she was behavioral euthanasia and the only thing I saw in all of her staff notes was that she barked at another dog,” Micky told GeoBeats Animals.

Moose had also endured physical trauma. She had been shot, had heartworms, and had gone through an abortion.

“She had been shot (I only know this because we saw the bullet on her X-rays, it can’t be removed but multiple vets have said it does not effect her or put her in danger), had heartworms & was treated when I got her, and had an abortion,” Micky wrote on Instagram.

Despite the stigma and the suffering she had endured, Moose’s spirit remained intact. Micky was determined to give her the life she deserved.

“I’m shocked that this dog, considering how terrible her first year of life was, wants to be everyone’s best friend,” says Micky.

A Gentle Soul With A Lot To Give

Micky had expected Moose to need significant rehabilitation. But to her surprise, Moose was anything but difficult.

Her behavior at home suggested she had once lived with a family. She was fully potty trained and understood household routines.

Her calm demeanor stood in stark contrast to the label that nearly cost her life.

Moose loved people and other dogs, and she picked up new skills quickly. Inspired by her temperament, Micky began considering her as a therapy dog candidate.

“Despite all of this she has been the best girl ever and is learning more each day. She has come so far and was the best thing that could have happened to me,” says Micky.

Micky lives with mobility challenges and needed a certified therapy dog. Moose’s intuitive nature made her a perfect fit.

“Usually, she sleeps by my legs, but if I’m having a flare, and really, really don’t feel good, she’ll sleep up by my head,” explains Micky.

Moose is now undergoing OFA certification, and her future as a therapy dog looks bright.

She’s been part of Micky’s life for over a year and a half, and their bond continues to deepen.

Together, they share a life filled with adventure, love, and healing.
