The reality of breeding dogs has been discussed many times, and it is often heartbreaking. Such a practice can be cruel and damaging, leaving many dogs emotionally scarred.
The toll it takes on their wellbeing is immense. These dogs often end up shut down from years of neglect and mistreatment. The bare minimum of care could ease their suffering, but most breeders never bother.
Thankfully, there are people who step up to rescue and protect dogs from such misery. Orca was one of them, a dog who spent years in that life until the South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter gave her a new chance.
Orca Finds A Foster Mom
As the holiday season approached, Haley Jeannotte wanted to do something meaningful by fostering a dog. She turned to a New Jersey rescue and found Orca waiting there.
The moment Haley saw her, she knew this was the dog who needed her the most. Learning about Orca’s past only confirmed it. She had been abandoned at the shelter without any paperwork, suffering from ear infections and severe malnutrition.
Her poor condition suggested she had been forced to live outdoors most of her life. Rescuers believed she had endured between six and ten litters before being discarded once she was no longer useful.

In Haley’s care, Orca began to heal quickly. But despite her progress, there was still a guardedness about her, which was understandable after all she had endured. Haley grew deeply attached to her and soon knew she wanted to make the adoption official.
Two weeks later, however, something seemed off. Concerned, Haley brought Orca to a veterinarian in New Jersey. What they found stunned everyone.
Orca was pregnant, and already in labor. Nobody at the shelter had realized, and the news came as a complete surprise.
Fortunately, the delivery went smoothly. Orca gave birth to a single puppy, later named Kylo. At first, Haley wasn’t sure if she could manage raising both dogs and considered fostering the pup.
But as time passed, it became impossible to imagine separating them. Orca proved to be an extraordinary mother, devoted around the clock to her baby.
