Cashmere is a pup who, sadly, didn’t have the happiest start in life.
He was discovered in a basement along with another dog, desperate for someone to show him care and remind him that he mattered.
Thankfully, that’s exactly what he got.
Adoption

After being rescued by animal control officers, Cashmere was taken to a vet for a full checkup.
Aside from a few bite wounds, he was healthy enough to move into foster care.
A couple of people initially came forward claiming to be his owners, but when that proved false, he was cleared for adoption.

Cashmere did find a family, but since he didn’t get along with their cat, he was returned to a Washington-based rescue.
At the Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington, D.C., he met Maya – and the connection was instant.
“As soon as I saw him, I said ‘Him! That’s my dog,’” Maya told GeoBeats Animals.
New Life

Though he’s a large pup in size, Cashmere’s heart is even bigger. Despite everything, he’s remained sweet and gentle.
He now has a new family and even a little brother — another rescue pup named Banana.

One of Cashmere’s favorite things is spending time with Banana.
“He is very patient with Banana. Banana is all over the place,” said Jonathan, Maya’s partner.
Pro Cuddler
Because of his traumatic past, Cashmere developed anxiety, especially around strangers. He feels safest when surrounded by the people he knows and loves.
When he’s with them, he insists on being close.
“He loves being where everyone is. And if not next to you, right on top of you, probably in a really inconvenient, heavy way,” Maya explained.

“He dislikes barriers of any kind. Even if a baby gate separates rooms, he whines until he can be on the same side as his humans,” Jonathan added.
Cashmere is also deeply empathetic. When Maya cries, he licks her tears to comfort her.
And when tensions rise between Maya and Jonathan, he steps in — literally. Cashmere places his paw on each of them as if to remind them that love always wins.

Of course, he’s just as eager when they’re showing affection, always trying to get in on the hugs and kisses himself.
“He is my soul dog, truly. Through and through. I feel very connected to him,” Maya shared.
