Mr. Snufflufugus, a five-year-old male dog, had recently been abandoned and left to survive on his own in Texas.
Terrified and alone, he wandered through the streets of Copperas Cove, Texas, hoping someone would notice him and offer help.
Eventually, local animal control was alerted, and their team managed to locate the distressed dog and bring him to the Copperas Cove Animal Control shelter.
Overwhelmed with gratitude, Mr. Snufflufugus embraced his rescuers in a heartfelt hug, melting the hearts of everyone at the shelter.
One staff member witnessed the emotional moment and quickly captured it in a photo.
The image spread rapidly online, prompting an outpouring of support and calls for Mr. Snufflufugus to be adopted.
“Victoria and I were in the play area with Mr. Snufflufugus when he decided he needed a hug,” said Tamara Hall, the animal control supervisor, in an interview with The Dodo.
It didn’t take long for the team to realize that Mr. Snufflufugus was a cuddly companion who loved affection. Everyone at the shelter was instantly charmed by him.
“If you are sitting on the floor or ground, he is sure to seek your attention by climbing into your lap or snuggling up next to you. He uses his irresistible sweet eyes while looking up for attention,” Hall also said.
Beyond his love for hugs, Mr. Snufflufugus was also known for his laid-back personality and fondness for relaxing.
Victoria wrote on her Facebook, “He would rather sit on the couch and be a potato, a good potato who gets many head scratches and gets to sit on your chest and snore, and is told quite often what a good boy he is.”
After the Copperas Cove Police Department posted the touching photo of Mr. Snufflufugus, his popularity soared, and the shelter was flooded with adoption inquiries.
They wrote on their Facebook profile, “Thank you ALL for expressing interest in Mr. Snufflufugus and for sharing our post! We recently discovered that he needs to be in a single pet home, with no small children. While he is exceptionally affectionate, this could create a problem in a home where he becomes possessive of the adult owner.”
Due to limited resources, the shelter couldn’t manage the volume of interest, so Mr. Snufflufugus was transferred to Pit Squad Rescue in Minnesota. There, the team could properly screen applicants and find the ideal home for him.
He is currently undergoing treatment for heartworm, which comes with significant veterinary costs, but the rescue is committed to giving him a fresh start.

Mr. Snufflufugus appears to be thriving with his foster family, who clearly adore him as much as he adores them.
